I'm not sure about it being a WAHTF lower. How woud I tell? I think it's just a regular lower. It has the Mega atomic logo on it. Where do you go shooting? I'm working on the 5th but sometimes I shoot at Tacoma Sportsman Club on Canyon Rd. on weekends weather permitting. I'd like to find a place out in the county somewhere to shoot where I can do some fun rapid firing...lol. The ranges don't usually like that so much.

It does not "weaken" the velocity, just the felt recoil. I guess I need to man up and take the pain . . . of course getting that second shot on target faster kind of makes up for that lack of manliness.

Mag-na-port has been tested many times since its initial introduction. H.P. White Laboratories performed tests on rifles equipped with and without Mag-na-port to determine the effect on free recoil and velocity. Findings in the laboratory-conducted test had a 20.8% reduction in free recoil for the rifle equipped with Mag-na-port. These same tests noted velocity averages less than four-tenths of 1 percent with the Mag-na-ported rifle, considered statistically insignificant.

In tests at Cornell University using a series of compression sensors rigged to a modified Ransom Rest mounted on a spring-loaded sliding track connected to an oscilloscope, a before and after analysis of the effect of Mag-na-porting on a series of different calibre revolvers was conducted. These tests were on revolvers ranging from .38 Special to .44 Magnum, in barrel lengths from 2 to 8-3/8 inches and frame sizes from small to heavy. Recoil reduction ran from a low of 11% on the .38 to a high of 47% on the 44 magnum. The conclusions drawn from the tests confirmed that Mag-na-port does not decrease bullet velocity or increase muzzle blast. These same tests also confirmed that Mag-na-port does reduce the intensity of apparent recoil.

The velocity impact from porting is affected by port placement with regard to muzzle and chamber. The trapezoid ports placed near the end of the barrel allow maximum bore travel for the bullet to receive full pressure prior to reaching the ports and exiting the barrel. Mag-na-port in and of itself has no effect on the accuracy and does not alter the internal bore configuration or in any way distorts the bore.

You should probably ask your step dad since you go shooting with him all the time.

I think the whole "what if scenario" is a cop out for just wanting to rock a handgun. If you're really scared for your life hiking in the woods then maybe you shouldn't do it? LOL?

I absolutely LOVE my S&W M&P .40... I would get the compact if you plan on using it as a daily concealed carry or even the full size if you want to use it "just for the woods."

Glock, S&W M&P, Sig Sauer, Springfield XD are all good choices and won't break the bank. I would do full size 9mm for target shooting because it is cheaper to shoot. The new Springfield XDM 9mm has a 19+1 capacity. That's a pretty good amount of firepower right there. Sig might be pushing the envelope as far as price though. Maybe look at preowned? I'd rather have a preowned quality pistol than a new cheapy.

Is it for stopping bears in the woods (44 Magnum revolver) or concealed carry (compact 9 or 40) or stopping zombies in your house (full size 9 or 40 to get you to your AR or shotgun)?

The choice is a really personal thing. You are going to want to hold your choices in your hand to see how they fit and try them at the range if possible. For example I cannot get comfortable depressing the grip safety and reaching the trigger on a full size 1911. Also being a lefty presents certain opportunities that not all models possess.

And remember if you are carrying the thing all the time weight is an issue as is a really comfortable holster. Sticking it your waist band and shooting yourself in the leg is bad form (and could land you in jail if you do not have the right permit).

THIS is an example of a really nice choice for CC.

THIS is really nice for general purpose. The P220 like the Glock is modular so you can swap frames, slides, mags and have many sizes and configurations.

The S&W M&P is also very nice, and there was a mail-in rebate on extra mags (not sure if that is still going on).

I was thinking about what gun to buy when I get home, but I think I am going to go look at Bows. I want to do some archery hunting next season...

And INS GUY - I can't say a single bad word about Springfield XD's or XD-M's. I have 2, my brother has 2, and my dad has 2. Not one of us has ever had a misfire or a jam, or any problem with them at all. My only problem is not being able to shoot them enough!

I'm going shooting this weekend when I get home with my girl, her friend and her friend's BF. (They just moved to Billings, and he's a gun/hunting nut like I am). It isn't coming fast enough. Or and I should be able to get in a day of bear hunting this weekend as well. I'm sick of shooting them with just a camera.

You can get a decent AR for ~$700, not great but decent.

I'm happy with my Bushmaster I picked up for $800 (maybe it was $750) used. It was like new though, wasn't worn in enough to eject that cheapass wolf ammo. It will now though (after about 1,000 rds through it). Plus I saw one at Cabela's before I came back up here and I think they want $1350 for an identical one.

A gun shop does not always have your best interest in heart. They really want to sell what they have in the store. With a bit of shopping you can find a better quality EBR than what most stores want to sell.

If you want to do it yourself you can save some dollars and assemble an upper and lower yourself. It takes some specialized tools so that may negate some of your savings until you do your second, third . . .

The two deals of the day on complete are on the Daniel Defense DDXV (List $1199, but you should find one for less) which comes with a $250 gift card for DD accessories, or the BCM Complete or Mid-Length for just under $1150.
