    Harm car? No

    Harm environment? Who cares? JK…no

Illegal? Yes, you need “a” muffler regardless if it muffles anything

Ticket? Probably just a “fix it” ticket.

won't harm the environment but it'll sure get your car keyed by your neighbors. do you not know how to install the mufflers?

    Re: ?? no mufflers...exhaust fell off..need input

You can drive around without mufflers, it will be a little loud but you can do it. The issue is that most cities have a sound ordinance where your car has to be under a certain number of decibels. As a person who used to drive a car daily with longtube headers, no cats(don't worry changed my ways) and a straight exhaust it's very easy to get away with it. It's not the best choice, but there are ways to do it. One of the best ways was to just move up to a higher gear and keep the rpms low.

There were lots of times where I was driving next to or stopped next to a police car and as long as you didn't go WOT you were fine. Although I did get a warning one time parked in front of a friends house waiting for them. It was late at night and apparently the exhaust pulses from the car idling were to loud for people nearby. A cop came by, gave me a warning and I turned the car off, problem solved... the crazy shit we do when we are young

yes i know how to put the mufflers on...a baby can do it...and looks a lil different, where the bumper is no tips to fill space...i used to have h pipe and tubi that was just as loud but i think this sounds better....and removes good amount of weight...will try to make a video and post it

S4 with just downpipes is not that loud. I ran mine for a little bit before I put the new exhaust on and the sound was sick! It wasn't raspy or way too loud but really refined ... very surprising. If it wasn't my daily driver I would run it like that.

    Re: ?? no mufflers...exhaust fell off..need input

Ok, so question time: I'll be the first to admit I have no experience with any exhaust work other than lowering mine to install my H-Sport Rear Sway Bar. I'd love to do a catback system, but I really just don't have the cash as I'm really wanting to do c.o. and am about to buy an H&R c.o. kit.

Anyhow, this idea really really appeals to me, as I'd mainly just like my S to be a little louder and am not really looking for the performance gain (we all know full exhaust is awesome, but number wise isn't "huge" gains). I listened to the videos on youtube and kinda like it, and if it wasn't going to be major work, damage anything, or be in violation of anything (other than possibility of noise issues), then I'd really like to do this.

1)Is there a way that I could have a shop just remove the mufflers and bend 2.25" pipe and add some tips to still have twin tips (or find some that match RS4 tips maybe?) and basically create straight pipes?

2)How much would this probably run, or would it be possible do myself (i.e. does someone sell something like that). What should I ask for or tell them?

3)How would this be done, is it a straight cut and remove or, I know many catback systems are "bolt on" (don't know how literal they mean bolt on). I quickly looked at my exhaust and it appears to all be welded from cats back, so if I wanted or needed to put the mufflers back on, how would this be done?

I know a lot of you all are a lot more experienced in this field than me, as I'll easily I'm a novice in many regards. But I do have some DIY experience as I've done many small mods on my car. So I'd like to go ahead and thank you for any helpful input you may provide! (sorry if I just threadjacked to btw)

Oh, and sammy, great lookin RS4 ya got there, and I have a hard time believing you'd want to pass on having the Tubi exhaust on it as I love the sound they make! I'd want them on my car any day of the week, but that mod would be quite a ways down the road for me. But it sounds like you've done a fair bit of tinkering and trying different setups to find what ya like the best.

    Re: ?? no mufflers...exhaust fell off..need input

If you just want to remove your mufflers and have straight pipes any real muffler shop could do that. They would probably just cut off the mufflers and weld in custom fit piping.

You can shop around, but for something like that it would probably be around $120-$250 depending on the shop. Usually for work like that you can sometimes talk them down. Just ask them to cut off your mufflers and weld in a straight pipe to your tips.

As for doing it yourself, unless you are an experienced welder and know how to bend pipe don't waste your time. Also, if you do want to change your tips, buy them first and take them with you otherwise you will get cheap tips with an exhorbitant markup.

    Re: ?? no mufflers...exhaust fell off..need input

Ok, thanks!, yea I went by a place today and he said he'd do it for about 100-120, so I think I may go with that!

I just want to check though, from what I understand our exhaust has a butterfly valve system on mufflers (if this is wrong, please correct me) so do I just need to have a cap put on that and secured.

Finally, is this going to cause any sort of errors or codes to be thrown? I understand that back pressure is key for our car, and I'm not trying to damage anything in the least. But I figured this far back in the exhaust, it probably wouldn't changed much. Again if I am wrong, please correct me as I'm not experienced, and am only really looking for the sound gains.

Thanks in advance guys for helping out!

    Re: ?? no mufflers...exhaust fell off..need input

It shouldn't throw any error codes as it isn't a huge drop in backpressure. If you removed your cats, or went to a high flow DP design than it would be possible. The mufflers are there primarily for sound deadening and should only affect the exhaust impulses slightly, however it will be a little loud
