jammed ashtray

I searched and couldn't find a thread on this. The ashtray in my 02 was jammed shut. I managed to pry it open and it seems that the cigarette lighter is not folding under properly. I'm not 100% sure that this is the issue. It's also not providing power to my cell phone charger. Is this a common problem with these cars? What's the fix?

I was hoping to find a wad of hundreds jammed in there. Oh well.

not commin for sure; I was going to say theres probably a coin stuck under the lighter (this is common), but if it isn't delivering power than something else may be wrong

mine got a quarter jammed under the lighter and would not open. I used a knife and was able to push the lighter down enough to get the tray open then I took the knife and was able to pinch the stuck coin out and no problem now. As far as no power...that may be another issue.

The same thing happened to me last week end, it was a bitch to get the quarter out! Afterwards, I tested the lighter and it still works...

Mine had a business card stuck under it. I had to use a scribe to pull it out, piece by piece.

If you have a swiss army knife and it has scissors, try that, it's narrow and small enough to fit and the grooves on the blades will catch the quarter.

try a roach clip or some tweezers.

Mine had a quarter stuck under the whole tray unit. I Bent a coat hanger and was able to get it out....and a piece of trident from the previous owner.

for the power issue.. Check your fuse or maybe the connections to make sure that power is getting out there

this is happing to my ar
the lighter wont flip up properly beacuse the plug for the lighter is unpluged and getting in the way
I dont smoke and I charge the phone in the house

I pushed the ashtray about halfway back and I was able to see the edge of the card. So I used a pair of twizzers and pulled it out as much as I could then pinched it down and out the rest of the way.

mtx - I think it's more common than thread suggests. Just spank the side of the console a few times (passenger side to release mine when it was stuck -- hasn't happened since -- mechanic showed me, so it's not unheard of). Eastbay, you going to Berkeley to get the clip?

Already got it taken care of. Thing was a bitch to get out. Damn quarter kept slipping out.

It's out and I immediately fed it into a parking meter.
