are there any future problems with high mileage/older cars if you dont replace these fluids? Lets say after 120k miles on a manual tranny? Older then a 1998?

None. The fluid that's in there is suppose to last forever. There are possible* future problems if you DO change it though.

I had a bad experience and the audi tech guy didn't understand why I was buying tranny fluid when the stuff in there was suppose to last forever. Though there are people on here that will say you can change for the better-my luck wasn't as good as theirs. And there are stories about people who replace fluid and the car runs horribly.

But if it's not broken, why fix it?

Re: What tranny and differential fluid do you use?

my last b5(99 1.8t auto) had a bad tranny bolt that leaked tranny fluid, so i took it to a bmw specialist who use to work on audi(certified), and he didnt want to put tranny fluid in for me because its a pain in the *ss, and that was one of the reasons he stopped working on audis. I convinced him to do it eventually and i had no problems with the auto tranny, sold it 2 months later.Anyways putting in tranny fluid is no joke, and that Oem stuff is supposed to last the entire car lifetime, i wouldnt bother changing, you might create a problem.

He must have not known the easy way to put in the fluid into the transmission. There is a plug on the top of the transmission just behind the engine. You remove the bolt that holds the plug, slide a tube into the hole and dump the fluid into the hose. Leave the side plug off so you know when the transmission is full.

Really? He told me that you have to do it from the bottom side bolt, insert a tube, then something like wait for the right time and temperature to shoot the fluid up the opening...oh man,lol...i was 16 when i first got that car 5 years ago, i didnt know squat about audis, i wasnt even on a forum, when i look back now i laugh. If that happened today, i would have done it myself no matter what the work involved.

Re: What tranny and differential fluid do you use?

I just changed the tranny fluid in my c5 a6 tiptronic @ 107k miles and in my b5 a4 tiptronic @ 103k miles, and I noticed that both shift gears a bit smoother and feel more responsive in tiptronic mode, so positive feedback on both from here. I had a long discussion with Ray at RAI about it and although we both have heard of situations where trannies went after a fluid change at that mileage, it seemed like in most cases, something was already wrong with them or the tranny was already on its way out. He highly recommends the changes and has never had an issue in the past with any cars he has flushed.

The fluid still breaks down over time. Plus it isn't like many of us are running "stock" power.

I use Royal Purple 75w-90 (i think....can't remember the exact number) in the tranny and the rear diff......was told it didn't need to be changed in a manual car....but did it anyway. And it REALLY made a difference. Much smoother shifting, surprisingly. Its easy to do and def worth it

    Tranny drain plug bit
I bought a transmission fluid filler.....its like a reservoir with a pump on it so you can basically fill the transmission and diff against gravity (since you'll be under the car while filling it)
a spare bucket to catch and dispose of the fluid
    and thats pretty much it

Personally, I would rather change the fluid at regular intervals.

The fluid may be considered "lifetime", but that is the lifetime of the transmission. I am a believer that the tranny will last much longer with regular fluid changes.

I changed the fluid and filter at 102K and it was really dirty. Didn't notice any difference in shifting, but hopefully, the tranny will truly last a "lifetime".

    YMMV.

    THREAD BUMP

I have my tranny out so I was contemplating doing this...seems like a 50/50 split on whether to do it or not, any more input from people who changed theirs a while ago and areaaaa still running smoothly??

BTW I'm at 18x,xxx miles and not so stock power...

so with my tranny out it should be pretty simple right? just drain from the bottom and replenish the same amount into the side with whatever fluid I choose...correct me if I'm missing something

Re: What tranny and differential fluid do you use?

With the tranny out should be even simpler as you should not need a pump to angle the new fluid into the resevoir. Aquire yourself the drain plug tool bit, make sure you can remove the refill plug before attempting (hex), remove drain plug, drain out old oil, replace drain plug, and replace till it starts to overflow (I think it is 2.7 quarts or something like that). The rear differential is the same process, but takes 1.9 quarts. 75w90 GL4 for the tranny and 75w90 GL5 for the rear diff.

Re: What tranny and differential fluid do you use?

If its in the car or out of the car its just as easy if you use the top sensor hole on the transmission right behind the exhaust side of the engine. Just 1 bolt, take the cap off with the sensor and slide a hose into the hole. Then you just feed the gear oil in from the engine bay. No need to lay under the car. Just leave the side plug off so you can see when the fluid has reached that spot, then just put the plug backs back on and your done.

If the transmission is out of the car you dont even need to remove the bottom drain plug. Just tip the transmission on its open bell housing end and open the normal feel plug, just tip it a little to get out all of the fluid.

i feel if you did drain it, (unfortunately i did too) worst case is put new OEM fluid inside. i have some random junk fluid in mine, so gotta re-do it, i didn't wanna touch my tranny fluid but i'm sure there's meta shavings in it, so gotta do that too
