Intake Manifold Spacer, 1.8t, Phenolic

Anybody uses this product ? If yes ,how degrees of tempature drop can I expect from the product ? I guess I heard that it effects the fueling ,is that correct?Thanks.

I run one. I found that it doesn't actual reduce the temps but just keeps the temps from rising as quickly and allows the IM to cool down quicker since less heat is being transfered from the head to the IM. The actual heat source that causes the temps to rise is the incoming air from the turbo, so once you get off the throttle the temps are allowed to drop quicker.

it's fine, or I haven't noticed anything but improvements.. I run one too and what mike said is pretty much accurate. The IM is noticably cooler to the touch then before after driving.

Something else to note, you *will* lose Cruise Control functionality with the spacer.. if you try to hook it up it will cause the throttle to be partially open when it should be closed.

that being said, it's still defentally worth it.

Are you talking about the 10mm spacer that 034 offers which also uses 2 OEM gaskets?


I run the Newsouth Peformance Power Gasket Plus which just replaces the stock gasket.

My AC was pulled out way back in 2002 when I went BAT which was well before I ever put the spacer in.

if you wanted to keep your cruise control it would be as simple as slightly relocating the cruise control actuator, or readjusting the linkage

i agree.

only issues ive had with this so far is that it hasn't held up as good as i would prefer since i have removed and installed the gasket a few times over the last few weeks diagnosing another issue. I wish it would have stayed a bit to shape. Will probably order another one becaue IM has stayed MUCH cooler even under beating the car for a few miles.

I'm using the 034 spacer and mabye I haven't looked at it enough but the ball cap is extended to the max and I can't get to push on, you also loose the support bracket connecting the im to the accessory bracket. I'd like to say the 034 spacer reduces iat's a bit since it pulls a smige harder buy without quantifyable data I can not say for sure

My cruise control wasn't effected and my brace still fits. I've had the NewSouth one for 3 or 4 years and at least 50k miles. It hasn't deformed and still does whatever it does.

Yes the 034 is much thicker and also needs to be used with 2 oem gaskets to keep it off the surface of the head/intake manifold.


Both pretty much do the same job since they are just keeping heat from transfering from the surface of the head to the surface of the intake manifold flange. Heat still travels from the head to the IM thru the bolts.

I had the ability to test both of them (on seperate cars however). I have the 034 Motorsports spacer on my A4 and I used to have the New South Performance on my Jetta before I sold it.

The install on my Jetta for the New South Performance gasket was simple, mainly because there was no coolant hose above the intake manifold. The after install results were surprising. After a long, easy drive, the intake manifold was cool to the touch. After a hard run, the manifold was just barely warm.

Install on the 034 Motorsport spacer was a bit of pain. I unbolted everything I could to make it as easy to move the intake manifold as possible. While removing the manifold, I had to bend the coolant pipe that is right above it a bit and in doing this I damaged the o-ring on the back of the head to where the pipe goes. If you're doing this install, I would recommend draining coolant first so you can completely get the coolant pipe out of the way. I was leaking coolant for a while after that install because I didn't realize I damaged that o-ring. The fix was pretty easy. I just went down to Ace Hardware and got an o-ring that was just a smidge smaller in size and it hasn't been leaking since. (They didn't have any o-ring that were the same size)

My after install impressions were a bit disappointing. I was expecting the intake manifold to be as cool as my Jetta's was but it wasn't. After any driving, it's about as hot as normal. I would say that it is a bit cooler though because before it was scorching hot but now you can lay your hand on it for a good three seconds before it becomes unbearable. I think this has to do with that coolant pipe above it. That's the only thing that I think that could be causing it to be so hot still.

Where could I go to purchase some phenolic material from a local store? Any ideas? I want to try making some spacers to space the coolant pipe away from the manifold to see if that helps with keeping the manifold cooler.

you could use heat wrap on the coolant pipe to contain some of the radiated heat but the most difficult thing would be to make it not look like total dog ass under the hood.

dude, your cruise control is electronic not cable driven. At least it should be.
