    failed nj inspection

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright so I failed inspection for my tints. I have the medical clearance from the dmv for them, but for a lighter tint than I actually have. It works if a cop stops me, but the inspector realized its darker than stated on the form. It says i have 45 days to fix it and get it re-inspected. I'm not removing the tint, i'm just going to bring it to private inspection, but my question is, do i have to wait until those 45 days are up to get it re-inspected? It doesn't matter that i failed at a dmv inspection station and then bring it to a private one, right? Thanks guys.

I would imagine you could attempt to get re-inspected at any point. You have 45 days to get that fixed, or else you are fudged.

I had a rejection sticker and I attempted to get it inspected 5 times in one week. This was in MA though.

that sucks. I have 5% tint on my car, but I don't have to do inspection. It's illegal if I go back to MI but I live in OH and have MI plates, so OH doesn't mess with me at all.

    Re: failed nj inspection

well the 45 day thing is just so i can bring it back within that time and only get the thing i failed for inspected compared to waiting on the whole line and going through a complete inspection. I just didn't know if my plates are in the system or something for those 45 days and a private inspection place wouldn't do it. Or if i could even bring it to a different place. As long as I don't have to bring it back to a legit inspection place, I should be bueno.

    Re: failed nj inspection

A private place won't pass you because you already failed for tint and it's on record. If they get caught doing that it's a $20,000 fine - if it's their first time.

For the cost of re tinting two front windows, it would probably be cheaper then going to a private inspection.

so they do keep it on record that the car failed for tint? is it kept on record indefinitely, or is it taken out of the system after the 45 days or a certain period of time?

not sure how long they keep it on there, but it's in the system for what it failed for - so they know what to check when you return :)

I think after you get a valid inspection it goes away.

Anyways, it should cost you $70-$100 to re-tint the front two windows - probably allot less then the cost of a private inspection.

BTW: can you PM the name/number for your 'doctor' who can get me this note, so I too can have tinted fronts? :)

    Re: failed nj inspection

I would give you the number and whatnot but the only thing it really helps is when you get pulled over. the exemption only goes up to a 60% tint, which is nothing at all. So there's no way in hell its worth getting to pass inspection, because you won't. but most cops dont know what theyre looking at when you get pulled over, so they just say "oh okay, have a good day" and walk away. If you already have an eye doctor, just go to them and say you've been having a lot of trouble seeing because of the glare, but rode in a friends car with tinted windows and it was much better. They should have no problem doing it. you can find the form to fill out on the dmv's site.

Oh and i know someone who knows the guy that owns the garage for the private inspection, so he'd pass me. So you're saying if he passes me, that should clear the fact that i failed initially?

Wait until the 45 days is up then reinspect it at a private facility. It stays in the computer for 45 days then it is erased and the vehicle has to be completely reinspected, which is supposed to hinder people from waiting but helps you. Back in 2000 I did just that, car failed for loud exhaust, which was bull because it was under the decibel limit but they said that it is the inspectors discretion, I knew that no inspector was going to override another inspectors opinion so I waited the 45 days. Took it to a private facility and it passed with flying colors. The only difference now though is I believe if it fails the second time the DMV flags it and you have to get it passed or risk losing registration. Even so, after the 45 days the reason for failing is erased.

    Re: failed nj inspection

the 45-day to re-inspect is just incase you get pulled over for not having a valid inspection, then you show the cop your notice and he can't cite you because you're still working on removing the tint. There's nothing on computer or record that you failed, all they have on their computer is your information, saying there's an online database to keep track of failed inspections is absurd. The place I get inspections done doesn't even have a computer. I failed inspection at the audi dealer for a broken ball joint, so I took it to a private shop that didn't know the first thing about audi's and he passed it no questions asked.

As for the 45 day policy that just means that it stays in the system for the 45 days and when you go for reinspection at any facility it will come up that you failed for the tint. as for the private facility if you know someone maybe they will pass you but most private facilities will not pass people for tint because they can be fined and even lose there license if they are caught. you may be better off waiting for the 45 days however because then you will get a brand new inspection and they might not question the tint as much and just say you have a letter so its good

the 45 days does not excempt you from getting a citation. once your sticker is expired(expires on the last day of the month idicated) the police can issue you a citation at his discretion. the 45 days is just a courtesy that when you return for inspection they will only check whatever it was you failed for in most cases.

the way the law is written is that you can go for inspection up to two months prior to what is on the windshield. so if you have a 10(october) of 2008(yellow sticker) on the windshield you can come through as early as the first of 8(august) and if you fail you would then have up to 60 days to legally to fix the vehichle(you still have 45 days for the reinspection policy..after that you would recieve an initial full inspection) but once november 1st rolls around you can be cited at the officers discretion. if you have a rejection the citation would be "failure to make repairs". the state figures that by giving you a 2 month window that is plenty of time to make the repairs and that is why you can be cited in november. most people choose to inspect their vehichles during the month they are due and then there 45 days carries them into november or sometimes even december and they think they are excused from citation but there not, it is up to the officer if they want to cut them a brake.

so basically the law is you must pass inspection by the last day of the month that the car is due. the law is not try to pass on october 31st and if you fail you have 45 days and then come back on the 45th day and fail agian and get 45 more days which most people try to do

also: the computer does keep track of the failure for 45 days. when you return within the 45 days it will automatically pop up what you failed for. after that the state run facilities can get a reprint of last very last inspection from the office regardless of the 45 days or not. and all inspection places have computers. the entire inspection is performed and recorded on the computer and the white insert of the sticker is a printout and not a drawing

it is at the discretion of the inspector providing it has cats and a muffler. the funny thing is that it couldnt have been "under" the decible limit because there is no decible limit in NJ. the law just says it has to have cats and a muffler and sound relatively close to stock at idle which is totally up to the inspector to determine

Mom in a tinted legacy gt...that's hot

I have the exemption from my eye doc as well, but went straight to a private garage where they told me my tint was too dark. Then I found another garage in a shadier town

I dont understand why you don't just remove the tint, get inspection (for free) and then re-tint?

    Private inspection is usually $100+

Tinting two side windows is usually $70.

Because that'd be a pain in the ass and I'm lazy. And considering I'm at school, i doubt my parents are going to take my car to have the tint removed, get it inspected, then bring it to get re-tinted.

Really? I may try and get to that some time. Whenever I'm home from school. I'd really like to try and get out to a few meets.
