So i come home today to find a nice letter on the counter from motor vehicles with my name on it.. and the first thing i can think is "I know this isnt going to be a good letter".. open it up and heres what i got...

Has anyone gotten one of these delightful letters from our wonderful New Jersey MV? I'm wondering who the hell sent in a complaint, if it was local or not too and if there is a way i can find out if a cop drove by my car and decided he had no real crime to fight and flag my car for inspection, because I havent been pulled over or received a ticket in years. This sucks hahah.. im also wondering if i just remove the front two windows, get inspection, wait a week and get them put back on, if i get another letter will i be fined right away or will they suspend my reggy?...

holy! that sucks man...are you sure they're just not trying to scam?

I know they try and pull that bologne when you buy a used car and get it for way under its value...they write you a letter expecting a payment for sales tax owed...I know its not the same thing...but they cant just do that to you can they?

no idea.. i hope its a scam... im gonna call motor vehicles tomorrw and say something like "i got this letter about having tints on my windows, but i have no tinted windows... is this a real letter or some scam going around.." i would expect its real.. i can understand someone getting my VIN# from my windshield.. make and model are easy,, but with that to get my name and address???? i would assume it has to be legit, but ive NEVER heard of someone getting something like this in the mail ,thats why i was hoping someone on here might have heard of something like this... if its legit i have a feeling it's from the beat ass town of wallington where the cops have absolutely nothing better to do and some bored cop wrote down my license plate while i was driving home on m lunch break and decide to give me a hrd time........





i have no idea if theres a ton of typos in there and i dont feel like rereading cause im a lil drunk and going to bed.. if anyone's had this problem please let me know or do you think its just complete bullshit from someone? no ticket, no notice on my car, just a letter...

thats a new one in my book. when is your current inspection sticker valid until? where did you go for your last inspection? call or stop in to your local mvc and ask them. i have a feeling that the cops are not involved with this one...

Dude thats crazy. Wtf. I've gotten parking tickets before, they never bashed me for my front window tints. Only the lack of a front license plate...subscribed.

wow thats interesting. im gona ask a few of my cop buddies if there is any truth to this. imo it wouldnt be the cops in the small town because if they wanted to give u a hard time they woulda jus sent you a ticket for the tint from the town not the dmv, because if the police sent u the ticket then the town would be getting the money not the state.

sorry it took me forever to respond guys.. I still didnt get this done... I actually got my tints taken off on Saturday so i can go get inspected.. I have until thursday to get my inspection. only problem i have now is this happened on sunday http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=244114 ............soo yea i cant get to inspection by thursday... i have only found 1 person who said they had this happen to them, and this was one of my girl friends friend that she was hooking up with, AND he's a cop. said he got the same thing for his last car, but he was selling it anyway. He said they told him he had to go to the morristown inspection facility too....

I also spoke to some cops and people at my job and they said theyve mostly all never heard of it either. The shop i got my tints put on and taken back off said they have seen this before because theyve had plenty of people come in to take them off for the same reason... crazy though cause ive had tints on this car for a year, and my previous car i had them on for close to 4-5 years as well.. a lot of my friends had tints for years too and none of them ever heard of this..

sorry again, i realize i didnt actually post the last update which i guess i didnt hit submit 2 weeks ago haha

anyway... I called the dmv in morristown to ask them about this, and he was like oh yea you just gotta bring it in to get reinspected. he said just take the tints off and get reinspected and thats it, i wont get a ticket as long as i get it done, otherwise they can go so far as to suspend my registration on my car. I asked if i could go to the Lodi or Wayne DMV because theyre much closer and he said no i had to go there.. no idea why, but i assume they might have "technicians" or some crap over there who know better how to look for other illegal mods on cars. I was told that DMV hires auditors to drive around and look for cars with illegal mods on them and then they send out that letter. The guy i talked to said it could of been anyone, a cop or an auditor driving past my car while parked in a lot or getting gas and they just reported it. IDK sucks either way. I planned on putting my tints on again in a week or two anyway to see what happens, but now i got this accident to deal with so who knows what im gonna do...

A newark sheriff i spoke with said its possible that I have to go to the morristown dmv because it may be that it is state run and regulated, as opposed to other inspection facilities which are licensed by the state to operate and do inspections... idk what hes talking about because as far as i know the Wayne and Lodi locations are huge DMV's and state facilities.

ill repost after i find out what i can do now that my car is not driveable, as far as if they say well your screwed and i have to get it in by thursday haha, or if they give me like a months extension or something to get my car repaired...

yea.. well it could be worse.. but people complain about this stuff but dont realize or dont know because they havent lived in other states.. but most other states have laws against tinted windows and makig sure you stay in inspection standards... dont get me wrong.. i think its ridiculous too...
but theres a lot of crazy criminals out there,, and if i was a cop i wouldnt like walking up to a car i just pulled over with dark tints on it either..... if i ever get pulled over i roll ALL my windows down.. they respect that... respect cops and they show you the same respect.. its gotten me out of tickets plenty of times... and ive only been pulled over for tints a few times in the 6+ years ive had them.. once when i just started working in the town and he was just looking for something worse and let me go anyway... second time leaving snowboarding at creek and the main reason they said was cause my friend threw a cig out the window and they again were looking for bigger issues and let me go..... also in seaside 3 years ago now that i think of it, at a seatbelt check.. but same once again.. was nice about it, they let me go no problems or tickets... i dont tihnk it was a cop that reported me anyway, cause like someone else said cops would give me a ticket so the city gets the money,, this must have been bad luck and some bored dork ass DMV auditor decided to pick on me probably expecting i had other illegal stuff like no CAT or something, justbecause he saw i was lowered, wheels, and tints... so whatever.. i think its retarded but i understand where theyre coming from

So i called the DMV today to let them know about my accident and not being able to bring it in for inspection this week and they said it wouldnt be a problem and they would note it in the system, which tells me my name is listed in some queue waiting for me to get the inspection done and if its not done by the deadline they gave me then they probably would take further action.. so either way i got an extension on time to get it done...

the guy i spoke to was also a little more informative about the process too, he said when i bring my car in they dont even do a full inspection, they just look to make sure my tints were removed then sign some document stating they were removed and dont need to take further action... he said it takes no more then 1 minute.. he also said i have to take it to the morristown location because it is a state run facility, and the wayne and lodi facilites actually are privately run as i was told might be the case...

sooo.. my car was totaled... so i guess there wont be any more follow ups on this because i obviously will never be taking it into inspection.

Sorry to hear about your accident. It sounds like there's a new initiative out there for the DMV with the auditors, or its an old initiative but with tint being a new initiative. Was your inspection sticker expired or going to be expired? You still didnt mention that. If it was not then im wondering how much gravity their threat would hold.

my inspection was good until september 2009. The sticker was a little mangled though, the top corner where it says "09" was kinda ripped off because my windshield got foggy as hell one day and the corner of the sticker got wet and eventually crumbled into pieces... i had a cop or two look at it though and they said they oculd tell it was still valid just my looking at it anyway or by scanning it.

As far as my car being totaled, They are still staying on top of me cause i called to say the car is totaled and i cant get the inspection done of course, and they said they noted it in the "system" and that once i get my new car registered and the plates switched over i would have to fax them a copy of the registration/plate transfer so my name can be removed from the system... so they obviously do keep track of if people do come in to get the inspection done.

BTW i bought a 2004 A4 1.8TQ 6speed... USP this time...

first mod will be 20% tinted windows again in a month or so after i send in that fax and get my inspection done hahahaha.. i dont think i can deal without having tints, ive become so used to it
