    Coolant Temp Fault Code

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a fault code error on my B5 A4 that reads....
16502 Engine coolant temp sensor (G62):Signal too high
    P0118-35--

Can anyone interpret this? Will changing out the sensor fix this?
My check engine light is also on and I have cleared the code with Vag-com but it comes back on again.

Ideas are welcome on how to fix this.

99.99% of the time it's a faulty sensor. Make sure you get the updated one if it applies to your year/model.

Check to see if it's the Square connector (black connector, blue sensor) or the new style D-connector(black connector and updated GREEN sensor)

    Re: Coolant Temp Fault Code

That should be the "Square" sensor.

Note the difference in shape of the connector on the sensor. Make sure you order the correct one. 98.5 should be the blue sensor ( I have a 98.5 as well )

    Blue (square)

    Green (D-shaped)

    Re: Coolant Temp Fault Code

Blue it is. I tried disconnecting the 4 pin plug and running vag to clear the code, but cannot clear it. I plugged back in again and still get the code.

What was more interesting was in the "readiness" section, i have some readings that show FAILED OR INCOMPLETE for the following , Oxygen sensor heating, oxygen sensor, evaporative emissions and catalytic converter.

The car is prette cold as I just went around the block, so it was not up to full operating temp yet. I now wonder if there is something else going on and not just the temp sensor?

In PASSED readings were, exhaust gas recurculation, Air conditioning, secondary air injection and catalyst heating.

    Any ideas?

The "incomplete" stuff is what's called "two trip logic". It may have seen a fault, but won't post a code/CEL/MIL until it sees the fault twice. "Failed" is pretty obvious, but I wouldn't worry about it until it actually brings up the code/CEL for that issue.

Are you running a test pipe or HFC?

Replace the temp sensor. It's a common issue, more so with the green connectors, but it's a cheap and easy way to start. DON'T forget to put a new o-ring on the coolant temp sensor. It should come with one, I forgot when I changed the coolant flange back there and it leaked everywhere for a min. I figured it out real quick, just save yourself some grief.

    Re: Coolant Temp Fault Code

No test pipe , the car is bone stock.
Thanks for the advise. I will get a new sensor tomorrow and install it. I guess I will run the vag again after installed to check for codes and clear again.
Wish me luck, that gets it!

    Re: Coolant Temp Fault Code

I changed out the sensor tonight. Easy replacement and the CEL light went out as soon as I started the car. I did not even have to Vag it again to clear the code.

The Blue sensor has been upgraded to the Green sensor at the dealer. Same 4 pin connector. Thanks DJWIMBO for your advise and help.

I did notice on the old sensor I could rotate the plastic part from the metal, so I guess the internal connection was the fault. I warmed up the car enough to see tha guage move up with engine temp, so looks like all is well again for that situation. Now back to the ABS sensor.

    Thanks again for the input.

i believe it said that because after you clear the codes the car has to run tests. and these test usually take a good bit of driving, like 100 miles or so.
I need to change my coolant temp sensor as well. glad to hear you fixed it

    Re: Coolant Temp Fault Code

#1 you have to clear the DTC before the CEL will turn off
and #2 it's a B5, there's plenty of possibilities for another code to come up.

    Re: Coolant Temp Fault Code

    I have a 99.5 1.8T.

The dealership also gave me a ECTS (square green) with p/n 059 919 501. My old ECTS p/n was 078 919 501B (Square blue). Parts guy said that the old number wasn't even in his system which I find hard to believe .

ecs tuning usually has all the different sensors,
for better prices than the dealer too.
