    Project Eden: Urban Assault Vehicle

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all,

I just thought I'd start a single thread to share with you all the mods I make to my car as I do them, that way I don't have to be making posts all the time.

Today, a buddy of mine helped me to paint the Chrome Trim beneath the trunk. I wanted to go with the Gun Metal Color like that of my wheels, so the theme will flow. It got a little late so we will be doing the window trim hopefully tomorrow.

Here is the rear chrome trim all taped up before we started:

Here is the trim on the second coat of paint

Here is the final result (I will post daytime pix tomorrow).

    Wheels

My Blackout grille has arrived also, so hopefully I should have that on by latest Friday.

    That looks pretty cool.

Is it a pain to remove that piece and just paint it off the car?

What did you use to paint it? I really want to see how the window trim turns out.

Re: Project Eden: Urban Assault Vehicle

I tried to take some close-ups right now, but I will in the daytime tomorrow morning again. These came out grainy cos it is night.

I did not want to attempt removing the piece, but in all honesty, it wasn't all that bad taping it up. Took about an hour to really make sure it is all taped up properly.
    Total cost spent was $18.61.

    1 Roll Thin Masking Tape
    1 Roll Wide Masking Tape
1 11oz can of Oops Amazing Remover
1 11oz can of Dupli-Color High Performance Textured Metallic Coating Spray-Paint Can

    - We cleaned the trim and wiped it dry.
    - We taped up the entire behind leaving the trim exposed. We were as precise as sliding the masking tape underneath the trim as tight as possible.
    - We then went on to spray paint, applying 3 coats.
    - The Oops amazing remover was just for if the paint accidentally touched the wrong area, which we didnt even need.

    Hello there...
If only you knew how easy it is to remover this rear trim, it would have saved you a lot of time...With a flat screwdriver, or even better with a trim remover tool, it just pops out...
The colour combo is nice, I hope it wont chip like mine did when I washed it...
After that, I went for the carbon vinyl, way better, and care-free....

Re: Project Eden: Urban Assault Vehicle

So the back trim is easy to pop off I guess. Well, this was at least good practice to apply to the window trim, now that is the big challenge.

Just took these this morning, here are better morning shots. It rained overnight, so the car is wet.

So hopefully window trim will be done today if the rain doesn't stop us. It's been raining an awful lot here.

Oh no...smoking the tail is not on my agenda. That is one thing I'm definitely not doing. I actually prefer the contrast of the red tails with the black exterior, it brings out the car better than every singe thing being blacked out.

Ok, right now I am really tired, but just had to show what we accomplished so far. We were able to only finish the left side window trim, except the bottom door pieces. We also need to do the right side trim which is all chrome. This task requires a lot of patience, and I only have time to do this after work, hence the dark pix. I'll take daytime shots soon.

Re: Project Eden: Urban Assault Vehicle

Alright all, I decided to hold out a little on completing the right side of the window trim and took the paint for a test. I to it to the car wash I always go to with the full wax job and all. I have to say, I'm not so sure this thing would hold up too long. Don't get me wrong it looks damn good, especially in person, I got good compliments. But after the car wash trip, It looks like the paint is thinning a little bit. So now I am thinking of going another approach my friend suggested, we'll see how it goes.

On another note, I got the blackout grille and installed it.

I thought about that also actually, if I applied clear coat, if it would have made a difference. Honestly, I couldn't say for sure. Part of the problem is that I want a matte finish. Right now, my buddy and I are brainstorming various other options

what paint did you use? Is it water resistant? High heat resistant? Sorry don't mean to question your intelligence... sometimes people just forget about those things.

I have to agree with you. A matte finish would be the best. When I was getting my car tinted yesterday, I was talking with the guy, and he said that just covering them up with vinyl would work really well, and then if you don't like it later, just peel it off. He gave me a little bit to work with and with the tint, the vinyl looked really good.

To be honest, didn't really check those things....but since it said High Performance, I thought it should probably work well.

Do you have pics of the Vinyl? How does Vinyl hold though, cos reading around I hear people saying things like the Vinyl looks cheap and that it shrinks over time.

Here is another funny thing, I almost feel like this paint really would hold up. I was looking at the work today again, the side that is thinning and chipping a little is the side that is closer to the door panel where the rubber from the door slaps on the chrome trim a little. Now I am thinking we probably didn't give that side enough time to dry and stick properly before closing the door, so it started sticking to the rubber. Cos the side away from the rubber still looks fine. Also the rear chrome piece looks fine also, no thin or peel yet. I think I might try it again and finish it up with maybe just 1 coat of Clear coat to protect it a little. I'm in a dilemma now....what do you all think?

The vinyl just holds with like this sticky adhesive on the back of it. It's almost like a sticker. You just cut it out to the shape and then shrink wrap it onto the car making it curve, and then just peel the backing off and place it with some soapy water. I guess it's the same vinyl that people use to wrap entire cars and mostly wrap roofs to give it that "euro" look.

No screws hold it there...Just some clips...
Once it comes out a little bit, then you just pull it slowly towards you...

Sounds good. I'm definitely going to have to paint that when I go back home! Thanks.

Sorry guys, after a damn long time, I finally got to finish the chrome trim. I needed a full day dedicated to doing this work so I had to wait until I could get one. Here are the results.

I also finally got around to putting the Cupra Lip
