Deer hit my car!!

I catch a deer out of the corner of my eye darting across the road and right into my car. It was 3 in the morning and well I had to keep driving. The deer hit the drivers side panel between the front door and front bumper. Will need to be replaced. No other damage anywhere. About to report it to my insurance.

Any ideas on how much this will cost to replace?

You mean the fender? if it's just that, then you'll be fine. I don't know about laws in your area, but you don't have to stop after hitting a large animal? a dog ran in front of my car once, bounced off the bumper, then ran away, so I kept driving, but then a bunch of people including a police officer waved me down to stop...

WOW....yeah i wasn't in a great position to stop. Plus, i think the deer ran back into the woods. i will post some pics in a little.

probably more then 600... i had a 16 year old kid back his girlfriends moms 1990's buick le sabre into my driver side fender... but a nice big dent in it, hit nothing else but the fender... went out and got 4 different estimates, all between 750-850..

i decided to save the kid and his parents some money though cause he was responsible enough to not run away.. he told his girlfriends mom who came and found me and i got it repaired + rental car for 2 days it was in the shop... i got it done through the shop that fixes cars for my company (Enterprise ) and they charge really cheap labor for us so i got it done for 600...... shop around, get estimates, but make sure you get it done at a good shop that wont mess up when matching the paint and aligning the parts

are u sure they "changed" the fender and not ironed out the dents.. somet places can fix most dents...

150lbs!?!? That's more like a baby deer haha. Shit a full grown dear even female will weigh way more than that. The average size for a male red dear is 650lbs. Why do you think you hear stories about people hitting deer and having their cars totalled but the deer doesn't die? A lot of times the deer just gets knocked out and then comes back like in Tommy Boy haha. That shit really happens too. Be lucky you didn't hit the deer when it was in front of you cause i know people who hit a deer and totalled ford explorers and expeditions and stuff. Your little a4 would have been toast.

haha, thanks i haven't posted any pics and i didn't think the above would work but i gave it a shot. Anyway, the damage doesn't look too bad. I think the wheel absorbed a lot of the contact. There really isn't any damage besides this one piece. not really sure if it affected anything under the body of the car either.

I have never had to report anything to the insurance company before. When i tell them the deer hit me will they send me to their estimator or can i pick my own. Also will they just pay the body shop or write me a check and then i can figure out how to make the most of it. I also have a crack in the windsheild which is $500 to fix and that's how much my deductible is.

A dog is consitered a persons property, thus a police report has to be filled. If you run over a cat then you can just keep cruising cuz a cat is consitered (under cali law) a teritorial animal, not a pet. (weird i know, but do any of california's laws make sense?)

yeah, they can be small but at my summer place in eastern washington i see white tailed tear all the time. A lot of them look like they would weigh more than 150 to me. But i've never ran over and picked one up before haha. But it would make the most sense that he probably did hit a white tail since they are the most common in the US.

looks like all you need is a fender i cant see if the light is cracked and your good as new. 150-200 for a fender and 200 ish for paint.

who cares if its 600 or 6000 you have insurance thats whats it for. The deductable is the same both ways!

if the car could be fixed cheaper or even just a little bit more then the deductable I would do it without the insurence. Rates go up, Accident Record on the car for a something so minor.

my buddies dad hit a deer in his a4 ruined his bumper, headlight, hood, front windsheild, side fender, and trunk... flipped up and over the car... yours just looks like a fender from what i can see but none the less that suck sorry to hear that

Is your car just black or black w/some metallic? Based on your pictures I can write you an estimate from where im sitting. I'm an appraiser at a shop in Maine so I have my parts database and estimating program right in front of me. I will write it up real quick and give you some kind of idea what you might be looking at.

If your car is just black than my estimate is just about $1000.00 including rebalancing that wheel & tire and having an alignment done and using an OEM Fender. If it is not just black then the cost will increase several hundred dollars due to blending the LT Front door and possibly the hood. If the wheel is scuffed or gouged or otherwise damaged and you insist on a new wheel they will more than likely give it to you. If you have a fax I can fax a preliminary estimate to you.

my shop just fixed the fender, they said it would be better to leave the original part anyway, and they did a great job fixing and painting it...


as for the guy saying something about a hitting a dog vs a cat.. same law applies in nj, if you hit a dog you have to stop, apparently its a felony or something ridiculous if you drive away... if you hit a cat you can just keep driving...

Fax sent, now as I said I only wrote for what I could see there is the potential for add'l damage once repairs have begun. What you should do is have a very close look at the vehicle before the insurance appraiser comes to look at it that way if you notice something minor that he might miss you can point it out. As you can see I wrote it using a 2002 model but the fender is the same from 02-05. Good luck
