Silver RS4 sedan conversion (RS4 body, RS4 brakes, FMIC,Blue dash lights etc.......)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

The base car was a stolen recoverd and from the pic's you can see it sat for a long time before a little love was given to it.

I bought my A4 not because I wanted to build an RS4 saloon, to be honest I never knew they existed until I bought my original car a 2.8 Quattro V6 30v (more info on this later).

Anyway why did I build this car well its simple I loved the look of the RS4 once I seen one and because I could.

Like I do with all my cars I own I hit the web and signed up to a few Forums
Audiworld.com, Audizine.com and last but not least Audi-Sport.com. These three sites were the first sites I signed up to and searched their threads in hunt for info. They all offer something different and some of them the same info. Your find lot of different people full of info and more than happy to help.

This was the donor car for my project a 2001 Audi RS4 Avant. The car was a crashed German import that could not go back on the road after the owner tried to.

I don't think I will need to add to many words to explain what went on as I think the pictures will cover most of this.

As you can see from above the base car was just a rolling shell, no engine or box and no trim.

What the car looked like after stage 1 of the conversion

Well the car got some updates after thisand the main thing that was replaced was the old bumper (which I never quite got on with) with a Euro S4 one and I think it looks sweet.

Well the car got some updates (15th May 2006) this update included a black roof repairing my BBS RC rims and painting them black and an S4 rear bumper which I fitted myself, oh and a set of H&R race springs to finish it off for now.

    Re: Silver RS4 sedan conversion

2007 did not see much for updates but I did install a rear boot spoiler which was made from a BMW E46 Compact boot spoiler and needed quite a bit of work. I also added an ebay short shifter kit which made a hell of a difference and some ebay Autobahn88 silicone hoses which for both sides where cheaper than Samco hose for one side.

    Intercooler

I upgraded the Intercooler ready to do a big turbo conversion at a later date and so I went with a Race Tec FMIC which requires very little trimming to the bumper and fits under a stock bumper as well.

    Symphony Centre Consul custom faceplate

When I did this there were no adapters for the 2000 double din A4's

Well I wanted to change my Symphony head unit with an after market, and as most of you know how own one there is no after market face plate so I'm making my own.

First of all I bought a B6 A4 faceplate and trimmed it down so that it would fit in the consul.

This involved trimming the bottom edge and the tab until I got a snug fit.

Next step was to use some mesh and fibreglass and some plastic bags so that I can mould the sides.

This has been today work and later I will take it out once the fibreglass goes off and use some P38 to get a smooth finish.

    The finished product:

I used Matt Black car paint for the finished coat

    Side Lights / City lights

When I bought the RS4 I also go the Xenon/HID's with the car and as you can see from the Picture there a million times better than standard units.

What I found though is that the side lights/street lights were very yellow and did not look to great with the xenon’s, so I decided to change them.

I looked around at the various bulbs on the market like the blue coated units and so on and found that I did not like them. I then started looking at the LED lights that were on the market. There are loads of companies that make these and they all vary in how much light they give off and colour.

I tried about 4 different types before I found one that I liked these where supplied by company called UltraLeds.co.uk and these worked great as you can see from the Pictures.

There is one thing you need to know about these LED's and that is they will not fit in as they should has the bayonet fitting is slightly different and so had to be forced in to fit.

One other thing if you order these lights and that is check your fittings as I know they changes at some point as my 97 A4 as a push fitting and not a bayonet.

Left lightis standerd and the right is the RS4 Xenon units.

    Blue Dash Light Convesion

Well the aim of this conversion of changing the lights from standard Red to Blue
involves a lot of work mainly soldering.

There are two types of LED's fitted to the Audi's and they are your standard mushroom
type and then the SMD/Axial type.

The AC needs the SMD Ultra Bright Blue(SLB3528) type, and just the display alone requires 15 LED’s.

The unit also as red plastics sheet that diffuses the led light to give the smooth light.
The actual info is produce in the glass at the front and the LED light shine through
giving you the image so you could change this to any colour you like.

    RS4 Brakes

Took this from a thread I did and put it all in one.

Well lots of people ask this question and load ask it after they buy the brakes so as I'm doing the conversion with RS4 brakes (they mount the same as the S4) I thought I would do a what’s needed and what wont work thread.

    Q: Will S4 or RS4 Callipers mount on to the A4 Hub's?
    A: No

Q: Can you get them to fit?
    A: Yes

Now you want to know how and I hope to have the answer with some info of what you need to do.

First of there are no current carriers on the market to allow them to mount on the A4 hubs so you need the S4 hub's to make this work with the drive shafts.

Now if you are FWD will make things very easy for you guys as your flange on your gearbox is a 108mm flange where as on the Quattro gearbox the flanges are only 100mm which means the S4 drive shafts will not fit. Before you think all is lost there is a way round this (pain in the arse but you do have an option). Basically you need to get hold of some FWD flanges which will just pop out with a crow bar (So I'm told).

Then all you need do is swap the flanges over from your Quattro gear box with the FWD flanges then the S4 drive shafts should all line up and bolt together.

I will be confirming all this at the weekend as Siena and me will be doing this at the week end as I have a almost dead CV joint and a couple of RS4 legs sitting around ready for the swap with all the RS4 brakes to match.

Well I got my FWD flanges for my 1.8TQ and they fit the RS4 drive shafts perfectly, so on Saturday it should only be a case of popping my flanges out and pushing these in.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 1024x768 and weights 222KB.

RS4 ARB ( this turned out to be the same as the 1.8TQ so no need to swap and the colour of the paint mark states it's type because they dont put part numbers on them)

RS4 leg and as you can see it's all Ally
This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 1024x768 and weights 277KB.

Ok just got home at 11:30pm and I'm beat. I have completed the conversion and I have to say they are far better than A4 units testing them with a 2.5 hrs drive home from Siena house.

I will explain more if anyone’s interested but for the mean time here are so pics.

Thanks guys but a lot of this is old news and lot's of people have seen this project when it first started but then there’s lots of new people on here who have not I suppose.

The original rims were standard for the 1.8TQ here in the UK and Quattro 1.8T here only came in the face lift and are quite rare here in the UK.

To be honest I don't remember the trunk thing but it would have worked out just in shipping to around $120-$140 and then around $120 for the trunk so not very cost effective for a trunk.

Wheels are way expensive to ship even for us, on average things are almost half price when we buy US stuff and I on many occasions have wanted to buy some BBS LM reps from the US but shipping makes them near on double the price.

you made a post asking who talked to you about buying your trunk lid.. no one could remember, it went on, a few of us asked ya how much for it shipped to the US. that was really about it.. that price isnt all that bad Doc.

wheels here arent too bad to ship, within the country that is.. about 150-175 bucks for a set.

The B5 is a great shape car and had I not done what I had done I would have built another but it was time for a change and that was the only reason I bought the B6 had I still had the B5 I would have myself sat at the steering wheel and buried with her.
