RS4 making me angry; back to a Civic?

    rant on

I always thought the RS4 was way overpriced to begin with, but I was stupid and spent the money. OK, my fault, bend over and take the depreciation hit for a nice, somewhat rare car, right? But now, after 25,000 miles, the tires are shot (even though I had winter wheels and tires on for 5-6 months), the front brake pads and rotors need to be replaced (the rotors have multiple grooves worn into them after 1.5 years of driving????), a coil pack just needed to be replaced the other day after the engine started misfiring, and absolutely everything inside the car squeaks. No, I don't beat the snot out of my car, I'm in my mid 30's with a 2.5 y/o son in the suburbs, I'm about as boring as you get.

For the depreciation hit alone I could have bought a perfectly fine Honda Civic that wouldn't require $1500 of new front brakes and $1000 of new tires within a year and a half of ownership, and I wouldn't have had to worry about every M3, C63, IS-F, STI, Evo, juiced A4, S4 or whatever else on the road wanting to race. At least it helps to avoid the embarassment of losing (face it, the RS4 is slow--it may have other virtues, but quickness isn't one of them) when you can point to an occupied toddler seat in the back.

Does anyone else ever just get sick of it?

Re: RS4 making me angry; back to a Civic?

My RS4 is at 17k miles and I just had it fitted for new brakes and tires (not at the dealership) and it wasn't cheap. The fact that you broke 20k miles is great. I do drive very spiritedly in my car so the maintenance was expected.

It is not fair to make a comparison between a RS4 and a civic in any category - especially with respect to maintenance. The RS4 is a HEAVY car and it takes a lot of power to stop such a heavy machine (brakes, tires, etc...etc). If you are then comparing to the bimmer or the benz, etc...you would probably be hard pressed to find one that out-shined the Audi in maintenance. Most of these cars will have similar maintenance requirements.

I would say that my only gripe with Audi in general is that the cars do have their rattles here and there....Never having driven a benz or a bimmer...I'm not sure how these other brands compare.

I will say this...while the RS4 may not be fastest of these other premium brands, its definitely rarer, less ostentatious and arguably more capable and versatile...

One thing is for sure...no one ever claimed any of these cars were cheap!

This is going to be good.

One question; Why did you buy it?

Comparing it to civic is such a stretch.

Re: RS4 making me angry; back to a Civic?

    man, you sound pretty peeved.
Yes, I hear squeaks and creaks more than I would like.
Yes, tires wear out. Which ones would be better in you opinion?
Brake pads need replacement periodically. 25k miles isn't bad IMO.
Personally I still love the RS4, but a luxury sport sedan is not an investment.

x2, all of those things you mentioned should really be expected when you buy one, nothing too out of the ordinary there.

I dont have an RS4, I have an S4, but I feel your pain. Repairs and maintenance, unreliability, and bad competition in the performance category all help the cause

Brakes and tires are to be expected at 20 - 25k if you use them aggressively. Try using the brakes less and the engine more to slow down and you should get much better life out of your brakes.

Re: RS4 making me angry; back to a Civic?

Ok, now I'm no Audi Tech. But I do happen to own 2 dealerships, once happens to be a BMW dealership, and another is a Mercedes. Now, I know enough about cars, that you don't need to completely replace the rotors. You should remove them WITH the dealer, and verify that you could just cut them. Cutting the rotors down, and then adjusting your brakes, would allow you to feel as if you have brand new brakes. Trust me, and also, I'd be happy to trade you an 08 335i Black on Black for your RS4. Comment back, or PM me. Possibly any Benz's your interested in? Message me, thanks.

Ha, I laugh at your cries @ maintenance bills.
At least your car has the price tag to justify the price of the parts, not when parts are more expensive than the car.

The only car that would be less expensive to maintain and still be in the same category would be the M3, because BMW has the free maintenance for (iirc) 5 years.

did you buy it to be a family/beater car or a high performance sports sedan? tires and brakes are all going to reflect of how you drive. they are wear items. thats like saying you didnt like your steak because you wanted it medium rare but you cooked it for three hours on an open flame and burned it. and if you can get sick of an rs4, maybe driving in general is not for you. take the bus.

I hate when people bitch about depreciation. Shouldn't be buying high end cars if depreciation is a concern. Simple as that.

First of all let me get this off my chest. You are a tool. 2nd of all the RS4 is not slow, you must be smoking some heavy shit to think the RS4 is slow. When did a 12.8 Quarter Mile time and 0-60 in 4.2 Seconds become slow? Also when you buy a $75,000 car did you expect it to be cheap on maintenance? Obviously the price to keep up a car is proportionate to the price of the car. The RS4 is just as quick if not quicker in most situations than the M3 and IS-F , we all know the C63 is a beast but i still haven't seen quicker times than 12.6 being put up. I don't even know what else to say.

Just to answer your question, yes go buy a Civic because you do not deserve to drive an Amazing Machine like an RS4. Go drive your 4 banger with 100HP loser.

Doesn't make sense- the mentality of some owners who buy these cars without factoring in additional costs.

Re: RS4 making me angry; back to a Civic?

I must say that I saw this thread many times today and I just can NOT stand the title of this thread. Civic and rs4 do not belong in the same sentence, period. Had to get this off my chest.

My good friend is a mgr at a Honda store, he can fix you up, or I work for Audi and can trade you out of it for a new A4, A3...whatever you want

The OP obviously has never owned a high performance car before. Just a tad unrealistic.

I can piture you as a guy who doesnt even know how to do oil change. I mean no offense to you.

RS4 is no Civic, it's thousand times greater than that stupid ass car. You can't buy any car and expect them to have all the same cheap maintenance.
German cars do depreciate more than Japanese models, either you deal with it when you buy new or you buy used.

    let me ask you this.
would you want to hear a four banger's boring sound all day or you want to hear RS4's jewelery high revving engine to scream all day?
would you want to sit in a cloth seat that hurt you back all day or you want the RS4 recaro treatment?

just be happy you are driving a RS4.

Re: RS4 making me angry; back to a Civic?

I always thought the RS4 was way overpriced to begin with, but I was stupid and spent the money.

Okay, so what car, in stock form, gives you equal performance, luxury, utility, all weather capability and exclusivity at a lower price? Answer-there isn't one.

OK, my fault, bend over and take the depreciation hit for a nice, somewhat rare car, right?

You bought this car as an investment?

But now, after 25,000 miles, the tires are shot (even though I had winter wheels and tires on for 5-6 months), the front brake pads and rotors need to be replaced (the rotors have multiple grooves worn into them after 1.5 years of driving????), a coil pack just needed to be replaced the other day after the engine started misfiring

For maximum performance tires, that is pretty good. You didn't pay close enough attention to your brakes pads. This is a maximally tuned engine -things will go wrong. A $100,000 race motor will be good for about 3 hours.

and absolutely everything inside the car squeaks.

Agree with you on this one, but with 35 aspect ratio tires, a sporty suspension and an equipment-laden vehicle, you shouldn't be too surprised. No amount of build quality can overcome the inevitable laws of physics.

For the depreciation hit alone I could have bought a perfectly fine Honda Civic that wouldn't require $1500 of new front brakes and $1000 of new tires within a year and a half of ownership,

Sure....go get yourself a Civic. Have a blast.

and I wouldn't have had to worry about every M3, C63, IS-F, STI, Evo, juiced A4, S4 or whatever else on the road wanting to race.

Okay.....so exactly what did you buy an RS4 for??

At least it helps to avoid the embarassment of losing

If you lose in a street race in an RS4 to all but a handful of cars, you seriously can't drive.

(face it, the RS4 is slow--it may have other virtues, but quickness isn't one of them) when you can point to an occupied toddler seat in the back.

Last time I checked, 4.2 seconds to 60 is pretty damn fast for a street vehicle. What planet do you hail from?

Does anyone else ever just get sick of it?

After 2 years, this car still puts a shit-eating grin on my face every time I drive it. Of course it's high maintenance. You didn't expect that in a car of this caliber?

I think you'd be better off in a Honda Civic. You don't deserve such a fine automobile as an RS4.

    ^ Yeah, what he said!

I'm guessing we won't see this guy here again...not anytime soon at the very least.
