Question Low Oil light -top off with synthetic oil?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello B7 owners,

Basically at 11,400 miles I got a "low oil" light appear in the dash. I called Audi to see what the problem would be and they told me that if that light comes up, simply add a quart of oil to the car. I did a double check and according to the dipstick, I was at "MIN" on oil. They recommended Castrol Synthetic SAE 5-40, but at the time I didn't see any 5-40 so got some 5-30 castrol synthetic per instructions from the user manual.

Anyone experience this problem often? I'm trying to figure out why I'm having to add oil on a new car? Any comments/feedback would be great.

    Many thanks,

My car only has about 7700 miles on it, and i've had to add oil twice already, once at 2500 and then i did my first service at 5000, and then i had just had to add oil again... i don't know why my car is burning so much oil, but i was going to have it checked at the dealership...

yea you can use 5w-30 or 5w-40 just make sure its full synthetic oil....I use mobil 1, doent really matter plus your getting your car serviced soon anyways....

Yeah I remember the tech at audi mentioning adding oil was common, but I had no idea this would be required so early.

I'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem...

you're fine... it happens... just stop rippin the car... but be sure to watch the oil levels... I would check it ever 2.5k miles... better yet just get oil changes every 5k

haha I only rip it once in a while. But pushing the car to its limit will cause me to loose oil?

its something very common...Dont worry...Others burn a lot, others less, others not at all...Just check if you have any leak, such as from the pcv, or anywhere else, and if u dont, just be calm...it happens...

pushing the car during it's break-in will make the car consume a lot of oil(i'm sure it continues to break in for a long period even after your first 5k) I pushed my car hard to a lot after the 10k... it's common... i still consume oil and i'm at 35k just not as much as I did when I had less miles. I remember getting my low oil level light at 10k around...

Re: Low Oil light -top off with synthetic oil?

I had the same problem a couple weeks ago (1,700 miles on the ODO - car is 2 months old) and called my dealership and they also said it was common and that I just needed to add a quart of oil. Went to Pep Boys and got some Castrol Full Synthetic (5W-30), solved the problem.

They said the turbo, especially during the first few thousand miles burns a good amount of oil...I guess its normal???

THANKS for trusting us over your dealership lol... i usually played dumb... I would go into the dealership and be like I see this light on... I don't know why the oil is low... and they'd be like "oh no problem... it's common... we'll top it off for you"... squeeze every penny you can from the stealership dudes... stealerships will eventually rip you off somewhere else so why not? . I do the same with my windshield washer fluid... I tell them it's low and ask them to top it off for ya...

however, so far my dealership have been honest and very courteous... yeah sometimes those guys don't know what they are talking about... but the lead technician usually know a lot more than those that sit behind the counter to "assist" you. And thank God for those TSBs... without those these guys would probably be lost.

My friend has an A3 and it happened to him. Car has low miles on it and the oil light just came on. We checked it and the dip stick said MIN. We went and bought about 2 quarts of 5w30 synthetic and he took it to Audi for an oil change. Car's fine.

Re: Low Oil light -top off with synthetic oil?

Hey people .. i have a 2007 a4 with 23500 miles. I have had this car since 1000 miles and now i am getting a "min oil" light in my dash board. I was wondering should i just add a quart of oil or should i get the oil changed and also considering the service is due in 1500 miles what would you suggest?

Re: Low Oil light -top off with synthetic oil?

Glad I don't have this problem yet. I babied her until 1k. Ripped on it everyday since. Fortunately I picked a winner because she likes to be pounded hard. I change her lube every 5k as others have suggested. I also stay out of boost until car is fully warmed up. Hopefully in the end all the extra precautions will balance out with all the fun we have.

adding more oil constanly is a definite downside to the a4.is is a common problem that will occure through the life of your car....mine does it about every couple thousand miles

Re: Low Oil light -top off with synthetic oil?

This just happened to me at around 9,600 miles. I just drove by the dealership asked them to top it off. And they did, no charge. They said whenever it happens, that I could just drive by and they'd do the same. The service advisor said that most A4's burn oil. As they get more miles on them, they burn less.
