    limp shifter? no reverse, wtf??

so im driving today with a guy from my club, we go to a audi/vw bbq and then go to pick up our website guy. as we are pulling into the parking lot of the place we are meeting him, i shift out of gear and my whole shifter just goes limp. it has no resitance at all. flopin around like a dong. when i try to shift into reverse, it goes into first. i can go forward though. i left it at that resturaunt overnight and am having it towed tomorrow morning to the shop i had my clutch done at a few weeks ago. im just curious as to what the hell could cause this?? it seems so damn odd that it would randomly just start being floppy like this. i didnt want to drive it incase it was a loose bolt and it fell out while driving and i couldnt get in or out of any gear.

same thing happened to my '86 Chevette. Think it was a bolt. I could lift up the shifter and poke it around.

under the car, but it runs from the front of the shifter to the tranny. my guess is the shop unbolted it from the tranny to do the clutch.
