    towing the audi...

I'm moving from Indiana (purdue) back home to california, and I started my trip today.

So I finally packed up everything I own into a 16ft budget rental truck, with my A4 being towed behind on a flatbed.

I made it 80 miles out of the 2000 or so when a semi in front of me got cut off by some last minute merger. He and I simultaneously touched our brake pedals to the floor and prayed. He stopped just in time for me to drive that rental truck straight up his ass.

I think the brakes in the trailer were not functional, so did the driver of the semi I hit.

Now I'm stuck in bumfuck "hobart", Indiana, south of chicago, in a hotel where a large male receptionist is relentlessly trying to get me to "watch a movie" with him after he gets off work. No thanks princess.

Furthermore, I don't even think budget is open to get a new truck until monday. I'd then have to unload the wrecked truck and re-load another one (assuming they even let me have another one).

The car was undamaged, thank god. Especially since my 40" samsung and my xbox 360 were in it! My priorities are obvious

    what a fucking day.

At least I have my AZ. I gotta have my AZ.

Damn, man. Be careful! Maybe if you watch the movie you'll get a discount on the room...

    Re: towing the audi...

Does the truck have a trailer brake controller in it that you can adjust for load, Have you ever driven a truck trailer combo. If it does have a controller, find a parking lot to set it up in, more then likely the control will have an led that goes green to red as force is applied, you want this to go red pretty fast with the load you have. If no control you don't have trailer brakes. In that case you need to drive real careful and use gear(guessing its an auto so you may not even be able to use gears).

This is one reason I love having my own rig(dodge 3/4 ton diesel, 24' trailer) for towing, cause I know how its setup and that it can stop quick if need.

    Re: towing the audi...

no, I had never driven anything that heavy before. I gave myself about three times the room I would if driving safely in my Audi, however, it was still not nearly enough.

I got a new truck and trailer today and swapped the load pretty quickly. I mad it to Omaha in about 9 hrs. I'm really milking it this time. No mistakes!

I had budget roadside inspect the trailer brakes, which they concluded were fine. I just horribly underestimated what it would take to stop that bitch. I never would have guessed that a loaded semi would out-brake me from 45mph with about 40 yards of space between us.

Semi's have brakes on all 5 axles, + jakes, and gears, and they have great traction due to the wieght, They can stop quick(I have little experience as I have a CDL and work for a company refinishing them and delivering them. )

Glad to hear you made it home.
