    Squealing Brakes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just put on PBR ultimate ceramics in the back with brand new rotors. Now they're squeaking.

Is everyone having this problem because it's cold or something or is it the brakes?

Also, The car is parked in a satellite location and I only drive it 2X a week.

    Re: Squealing Brakes

    1. did you break them in properly, or at all?

    2. Anti-squeak compound? Put some on the pads?

I have those now and they started squeaking after 3000km.....I just put some anti-squeak on today....now they're quiet as can be.

I've never heard of an anti-squeak compound. Can you give me a link?

I googled it and ended up getting into more forums

I know what you mean. I believe the one I got you can find at Autozone. It's in a greyish blue bottle. When it comes out it's blue. There are a few different ones but I find this one works the best. If you give me till noon sunday, i'll get the name of it for you.

    Re: Squealing Brakes

the one I have just says disc brake anti-squeak on it. It's a grey/clear squeeze bottle with a blue liquid.

when you put it on you put it all across the back of the pad and also under the little fingers. Basically, any part of the pad that touches the caliper should have this on it. It's easy to do and keeps them quiet for a long time

Yeah. I used the red stuff. Is it the same stuff? Isn't it a glue that keeps the pad from sticking to the rotor?

    Re: Squealing Brakes

NOTHING should go between the pad and the rotor. AFAIK it should only go on the back of the pad, the sides and the slides. I put those same pads on maybe 1k miles ago and when I first got done breaking them in they were quiet. They are a little bit louder now, but they really don't squeek very often. Just occasionally, when I'm comming to a slow stop. I'd try applying the ani-squeal and breaking them in again.

There are one's that are like a glue, but I put that on when I did my pads in the spring. They were squealing by August. I find this blue stuff I use does an excellent job of keeping them quiet.

    Re: Squealing Brakes

The squeal paste goes on the backs of pads.

I've had those pads for several years and haven't ever heard them make a sound. My bet is that there is contamination between the rotor and pad or that they haven't been properly bedded.

    What's "bedded"

...You're probably the reason I bought these pads because you were so sure on them. So I trust I must have done something wrong

take the pads out and put some grease on the back of the pads and all the thin metal pieces (not on the rotor or a contact surfaces of the pad) that should help...

    Q. Bedding in: what is involved?
    A. Bedding in, or burnishing, is usually done by conducting a number of medium level stops with sufficient distance between them so that the brake temperature at the start of the stop does not become too high (e.g. 100-120oC lining temperature at the start of the stop). When testing at PBR we conduct 200 stops from 65km/h at 0.4g with an initial brake temperature of 120oC. That equates to about one stop every kilometre. The purpose of burnishing is to have the lining wear to match with the rotor and to deposit a film of the lining material onto the rotor to stabilise performance.

In a nutshell, some of the pad material beds or becomes embedded in the rotor. This helps things work better and quieter.

    Re: Squealing Brakes

I have these same brake pads and they don't make a sound.

I did use the anti-squeal compound and bedded them according to the directions, and so far so good (~1000mi)

    Re: Squealing Brakes

Yeah that blue stuff is the use to be red stuff. I guess the changed the colour for looks... or some new blend lol.

When i change the pads, i clean everything with brake cleaner
Clean the threads of the pin (white grease them)
Put Anti squeel on the pads(blue stuff)
    put em back in
    make sure everything is tight.
    Go work em in.
