WTF is this in my bellhousing (96 Trans I think)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, when I pulled my trans back out, I realized there was an odd hole in my bellhousing. I haven't seen it on other B5 transmissions except mine

    WTF is this hole?

Pic of a normal trans for reference

Dude, Mine is the same. I don't know what it's for, but it's supposed to be there. The way the bell housing is cast, makes it look like it's for cooling or something.

You can't see it, but it's there...

Mine is technically a 98.5 if that makes a difference

That trans has been out a lot. I think I pulled it 5x or more, in 3 months

It is probably just some kind of hole left from the foundry that cast those cases. Car manufacturers will get stuff like this made by multiple vendors if needed to keep the volume up. One of the vendors probably found that that hole aided some how in making the casting easier.

It serves no purpose other than being an idiosyncrasy of a mass produced part. You have more than one person making a specific part they may go about it differently.

If you can find out if it is for a specific trans code or year range it may make more sense. The trans code is a 3 letter code on the bottom of the trans.

No worries, just an odity you will see. I have seen this kind of stuff, even as far back as my muscle car days when I started out with the old school 60s heavy metal. You would see 2 parts, same part number, same car look different.
