LM BBS Reps were rubbing the control arms and tore the tread off of my Kuhmo!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is this something that can be corrected by spacers?
Is it a common problem with the LM BBS reps and sport suspension?

I can load up pics tonight if needed, basically the corner of the tread on the insides of the front two wheels was ground down by the upper control arm to the point that it grabbed and tore a .5" by 18" strip from the tread leaving the steel braid exposed.

that sucks. Did it happen in front, rear, or all around? whats the offset of the wheels, and how wide are they? how wide of a tire are you running?

Re: LM BBS Reps were rubbing the control arms and tore the tread off of my Kuhmo!

Sorry, only happened on the front two tires. Rubbing was on both sides and you can clearly see where the control arms were making contact. Only one side was actually torn up though.

Not sure of the off-set, the PO put them on and I have put maybe 4k on the car since buying it. I have been noticing a slight pull to the left (the tire which was ripped up) for about 3 days now and then this happened yesterday.

I put the stock rims on and the pull was gone, go figure.

it pulls to the left cause that is the side where there is friction from rubbing.

i bet your have the wrong offset on the rims....did you get those wheels off a MkV gti? Replace the tires and put spacers pm

Re: LM BBS Reps were rubbing the control arms and tore the tread off of my Kuhmo!

I'm having this SAME exact problem. fronts only rub, and my passenger side front tire got torn up. still haven't figured how to fix it since it just happened, i'm thinking of going with 10mm spacers, or 225's instead of 235's........

here's my thread i just posted yesterday.

there would be no tire, 225 is already pushing it. or am i missing something??

have pics of a 215/35/19 installed on a rim?? would like to see what it would look like.

i'm thinking i might just run 10mm spacers, and continue to run the 235/35/19 on there and hope it's enough clearance.

But I thought running the spacers with Quattro was a no no.

ah i didn't notice the /35/. the 215 would be a little on the small side. And spacers on quattro won't effect anything.

i don't remember hearing that. some people make a big deal about doing stuff with quattro.

alot of people used to say running staggered wheels on quattro was a no no, now there's tons of staggered setups, also running tires with different tread patterns, most of these are myths I THINK. Quattro is an all mechanical setup, no sensors, wires, blah blah blah.

spacers on quattro is fine. Staggereed wheels are fine. The only thing you cant do is run different sized wheels and tires. they all have to be the same height. If you have something taller in the rear or front, the rotations will be off, and will demolish your tranny since the gears will be roating at different speeds.

so i guess the best bet WOULD be spacers.........i'm gonna try the 10mm and go from there, hopefully they work out.

that makes sense, but some people say you CANT run different tires with different treadpatterns, if they are all the same size it shouldnt matter. like you said as long as im not running 19s in the back and 17s in the front.(and even then if you had some big tires in the front to compensate ie. same rolling diamater. it still would work)

anyways, to go buy spacers i go.........

    Well thats great news!

The local auto store has 10mm rubber spacers for $13 and the hubcentric rings for $6. Is that what I would need or do I need metal?

Def dont want the rubber spacers... just get some H&R's or something similar(NOT RUBBER) that comes with lengthened bolts. They should run you around a hundred bones depending where you get them from

Spacers. When you fit new wheels and tires to a car it is a good idea to hold your digital camera in the wheelwell and take some pictures of the clearance. At least try to slip a finger or pencil or something between the tire and anything it may contact.

If you have a quarter inch of clearance it won't touch ever. I run 245/40-17 on 17x8 et35 without any inner contact.

Re: LM BBS Reps were rubbing the control arms and tore the tread off of my Kuhmo!

The whole spindle assembly turns with the wheel and tire so there isn't much of a chance of the sidewall getting torn while turning. If the tire pressure is really low and you take a hard turn like at an autocross then there is a chance the sidewall will flex enough to touch the arm but that is very doubtful.
