    synthetic?
    semi synthetic?

Castrol GTX Full Synthetic 5w-35 for 80% of its life (believe thats the dealerships oil)

Then switched to Mobil 1 0w-40 for a while (when the turbos blew)

Now I use Royal Purple. I believe 0w-40 iirc.

But my turbos blew because the wastegate line popped off.

Re: what oil were you using when your turbos failed?

    Original K03s:

    Mobil1 0W40
Driver side turbo's turbine wheel impacted the turbine housing under 1.0bar of boost in 2nd gear.

    K04s:

    Mobil1 0W40
Driver's side turbo failed due to poor oiling (thrust shaft sheered in two under WOT and the turbine wheel shot out into the downpipe. Passenger side turbo had compressor wheel damage on the front edges (debris left in pipe).

I'm 100% certain that these issues were a result of Riverside Audi's Technician. He left a ziptie in my linlet on the passenger side which ruined the compressor wheel on that side. The driver's side was wearing down for a long time (almost a year) and it must have not been primed with oil when the tech did the swap. The car had 10 extra miles on it when I picked it up and everything in my trunk was slammed against the trunk lid.....

Who goes WOT on brand new turbos in the first 10 miles?!?!

Re: what oil were you using when your turbos failed?

    There is no trend here.

Keep in mind that most of the S4s are running on Mobil 1 0W-40 as per recommendation from just about any Audi internet forums, which means that majority of the people with blown turbos are running on these oil simply because it is the oil of choice by the majority. You might as well ask to see how many people that have blown K03s are right handed, but we all know that has nothing to do with one another.

For the record, my K03s were replaced by choice at 98,000 miles and I have been using Mobil 1 0W-40 since 5K and Mobil 1 0W-30 before that. That is because at that time, 0W-40 was not yet available here in the US at that time. The two K03s looked perfectly fine with zero shaft play and the turbines are perfectly fine. They were inspected and sold to another fellow AZ member to use in his car. To the best of my knowledge, they are still working well for him without missing a beat.
