I believe this is a common problem, instead of changing the bulb have you tried tracing the wire and seeing if there are any loose connections. Could possibly be a short somewhere a. Somethings got to be the matter, 4 bulbs in three months is quite excessive.

Bad contacts maybe? Bend them a little and see if it makes a differance.

are you using gloves while you put the bulb in? sometimes oil screws it up..alot of times i put bulbs in using greasy fingers from working on other mechanical shit and the bulbs last for like 3 months and die..try using a latex glove and putting the bulb in..and make sure that the piece that you put the bulb into is not corroded or dirty that might be also itt..

    Re: Starting to get fustrated...

I've been getting these "brake light" out warnings too as of late.

I went and unscrewed the housing, took out the connector, reconnected it, and poof it works. This was for the left side.

    That was 2 days ago.

Yesterday, I got a warning for the right side, so I repeated the steps and again, it worked.

Today I was driving, and got a right side warning again, so since this was about the 5th time, I said "screw it" and turned off the car.

Went back to the car, started it up, and like magic, no warning and a working light.

Keep in mind, whenever I got a warning, the light was actually out, but it would go back on after I "remedied" the situation.

    Anyone got any tips?

    -Andrew

I've had it happen with my front signals and rears. It's almost always just an issue with the contacts.

I was told by my mechanic (who mostly works on VWs and Audis) that you have to change all the bulbs when one goes bad. By just changing the bad one it somehow effects the balance between the new bulb and the old bulbs causing them to burn out over and over.
I replaced just the brake bulb about 3 months ago and it burned out last week.
I changed all the bulbs in the housing this time, so we'll see if his theory checks out.

    Re: Starting to get fustrated...

On my Avant, I had an issue where the right rear brake warning light came one, I would check the bulb and it was fine or the warning light would go away. I took the lamp assembly apart and found that the base which the bilbs fit into, the mtal portion, is just held together with plastic tabs, sort of like a spot weld. These had broken, but looked good on a quick visual inspection. When the bulb was put in the socket, the spring tension would sometimes cause the base of the bulb to not have contact with one of them. I used a sall screw and epoxy to repair it. My alternative was to install a new bulb base in the tail light assembly. No problems since.
