Easy way to find exhaust leaks?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I think I might have one considering I changed all boost leaks and a faulty DV that I had and It still makes the futtt, futtttt, futtttttttttt on acceleration. I know you need to check it on a cold start and have someone cover the tailpipe to block off the exhaust and force a leak out of where its leaking from but I don't have a lift of any sort and cant get under the car to see if there is a leaking spot. Is there any easier way to check the exhaust system and find out if its leaking. I am also going to check the gaskets but I can only get to the one stating at the turbo since its under the hood. Help?

    There's your first problem.

Unless it's a completely busted flex pipe, something is obviously hanging down, or the cat separated from the flange, I'm not sure you'll be able to locate it.

Does it only make noise under accel or can you hear it if you're up by the side of the car?

Rule of thumb when looking for an exhaust leak. If it's been leaking for awhile (like a broken weld or hole in pipe/flex/flange) it should have a black mark around it from carbon deposits. Obviously you would need to be able to find it by getting under the car though.

you can also plug up the exhaust tips in the back and try to listen for the leak

usually there is some black buildup at the leak

Well its only under acceleration it flutters for a little about 30 sec or so then stops. I'm thinking the exhaust gets hot and closes maby a real tiny hole when it expands. My first thought was a boost leak so I fixed all of them and fixed my dv and its still happening. Im thinking its a gasket becasue it sounded like it was coming from the engine so I first fixed boost leaks. My old cars cat separated from flange and I know its not that becasue its fine I checked it.

Most likely a gasket. When it gets hot, it expands and probably fills that gap.
