Remember my beautiful custom made FMIC I had made and installed last summer (2007)...

Well it's coming off the car because it performed poorly!

Since I have had the AIM MXL Pista installed in the car I can tell constantly what the IAT is by reading the readout on the Pista.

Well in August while tracking in not so hot weather I saw +72C IATs... Yes you read that correctly folks, +72C on the AIT! So can you imagine how much power I was loosing?! As a reference with my OE DSMICs I never saw above the mid 40Cs and that was on a very hot day at the track.

So prior to this weekend's event we removed the A/C's condenser giving more space between the FMIC and the radiator. We also trimmed the Caractere bumper to allow more air to flow into the FMIC's top portion...

Well this weekend it rained on Saturday at the track and we drove on a wet track with temperatures not exceeding 15C or 59F and I still got in the mid 50Cs for IATs.

On Sunday I got in the mid 60Cs! So needless to say this sucker is coming off.

The only good thing about this weekend is that despite this continuing problem with very high IATs which for sure meant a loss of power and the constantly nagging ECU problem I was still faster around the track than the R8s and many P cars.

The solution to my FMIC problems is on its way by UPS and I should get it next week. I bought two (2) new cores of which one I will keep as a spare (in case of an accident) and two new end tanks will be welded to the new core. Hopefully this new very core which is also bigger then the outgoing core will solve the problem.

The new core is 19.75 inches wide by 8.0 inches high by 3.5 inches deep. The new core is not a bar and plate design but a highly efficient, special extrusion tube and fin design. The cores are made by Setrab.

It will be a while before it is installed because we are going to wait until the BT comes in and we start on the custom made exhaust manifold to see where the plumbing all falls in place. All piping from the BT to the IC will be in aluminium and the same from the FMIC to the throttle body.

Outgoing Z-Flow bar and plate FMIC.

oooo, I remember this one. I had the question about the exit at the top with respect to heat rising. I'm not saying that's the reason just that I remember.

Jet, all of your great ideas always cost twice as much and perform half as well. I do give you credit for having deep pockets and being a rebel though.

    Really?!

Well this one cost me nothing because the shop is taking it back and redoing all the plumbing on the new one. It's only normal to pay for custom work but so far that's the only failure (if you want to call it that) on this car.

As for the rest it's all worked out great with exceptional performance on the road and on the track and proved bullet proof to boot!

Oh shit you're right I forgot about the DNP piece of crap! Well at least I got a second one, V2.0 brand new which I use as a paper weight so not a total loss!

As for the Dahlback that too cost me nothing I got a full refund.

Besides someone on here as to test things by being a guinea pig so others can learn about certain parts being offered to our 1.8T community.

Jet Jockey, you need a bar and plate core with horizontal rows man, the vertical rows thing is great for keeping minimal pressure loss, but sucks at cooling...

Ever wonder why GayPR is the only one running this type of FMIC? and no one buys it?

Well the car is not 100% finished yet.

This week it's going in for the complete removal of the steering column.

Last week I removed the Recaro sliders from my car to back up the Recaro seat as far back as I could in the car. The back of the seat’s head portion is now right up against the cage and we secured the seat to the chassis by welding it into place with rectangular shaped tubing.

Now this brings up a steering wheel problem… Even fully out the steering sits too far from me, the angle in my arms is more than 110 degrees. It was always in my plan to get a quick release wheel but now it’s a must. So the whole steering wheel column assembly is coming off and a custom made one will replace it.

Hopefully this week I will have pictures of this mod.

Once this done and hopefully by next weekend the car goes in to get its interior/roll cage painted so more pictures to come of that too.

Jet, have you seen the Quickclamp? It's been tested to 1000psi and only takes 5 seconds to take on/off

Tough to go wrong with the Wiggins but the Quickclamp has been gaining popularity with race teams due to its performance characteristics and quick-release design.

They're nice, but before you know it, you have $600 in clamps. I run t-bolts and couplers on all my hoses and have not blown one off to date. If you run the right size hoses and clamps and make sure you don't have any sorts of oils on the fitting they'll be fine.

Around 55*F... my intake temp was 44*F... so even after a hot-as-fuck turbo my IAT was well below ambient temp. Meth FTW.

At cruise it was like 20*C... idle is like 24*C. Obviously that's just with the FMIC since the meth sprays at 10psi. Once the meth hit, it quickly went below 10 and stayed there until I let off. I've added a bit of timing and the car pulls hard.

I'll post a screenshot of the log when I get dressed and go outside. My dad is borrowing the laptop soon so I'll just get it off now.
