    External wastegate questions...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
For those running with an external wastegate, what is better?

    Exhaust externally to atmosphere?
Exhaust the flow somewhere down the line in the downpipe?
What's the theory behind either option?
What are the pros and cons to either way?
Which if any gives you better performance?

    TIA

i suppose it all comeas down to how loud you want it to be..i can't see there being a performance difference..but i could be wrong

    vent to atmosphere. do it!

before i list off some pro's. it is said that the external WG pipe to the downpipe will crack in no time anyways. even with a flex pipe between them

    pro's:
more flow-in both turbo outlet and overall exhaust gas flow
    easier to maintain
    much more options in sizing

    Con's:
it's loud/annoying for a daily driver.. but look who im talking too

    Re: External wastegate questions...

Can't you make it quieter depending on where you route your piping to. I have also seen setups with muffled (motorcycle mufflers or somtheing just as small) wastegate dumps that made virtually no noise

Given what your car is, I can't see any pros that outweigh cons to have it routed back in (noise, etc...)

    Re: External wastegate questions...

I agree with Greg. On a track car I would never consider routing it back in. Of course if you did I doubt that the increased exhaust flow would matter since you won't be maxing the flow of your piping and technically that same volume of exhaust would be flowing through the pipes if you wg wasn't open anyway.

    Re: External wastegate questions...

but if the wg isn't open it's more volume to occupy for the gases which will theoretically decrease performance by decreasing velocity and adding a new, non-direct, path for them to follow.

on that note -- open dump is fun as hell. DO IT

    Re: External wastegate questions...

Open dump, the wastegate reroute interupts the flow out the exhaust and also causes resistance back up the wastegate reroute which slows its movement
