How many miles do you guys have on your motors? I have 150k on mine all stock and i want to throw a chip at it. Bad idea? I see a friend of mine with an old turbo Volvo with 200k modding the crap out of it and beating on 350z's lol So what about our cars bad idea?

Re: chipping a high mileage motor?

I have 110K n mine and I don't have any worries about when I go BT and more than double my stock hp.. my chipped one runs like new, burns no oil and is mechanically in good condition.. really the engine isn't the worry, it's all the dry-rotted vacuum lines, stock clutch and rubber hoses that should be checked. even with that consideration, just adding a chip shouldn't cause too much worry, unless the above are in critical condition.

    ^^^ what he said.

if you don't have sludge, and the engine isn't making any funny noises, and everything looks ok under the hood.... go for it

150k on mine and the only problems I have had are the ICM and the stock clutch is quickly on it's way out...

...Just make sure the maintenance has been done.

Re: chipping a high mileage motor?

150k on APR stage 3. Chipped turbo came out at 145k, It was GONE. So was the exhaust manifold... Big crack through both.

You might have to replace your exhaust manifold and turbo, but the engine (properly cared for) should last! Keep in mind your turbo will need replacing anyways at some point.

Re: chipping a high mileage motor?

yes, the basic k04 software that is available doesn't require much else besides the turbo, but you will also want AT THE VERY LEAST a full exhaust and upgraded diverter valve.

I chipped mine @ 157K. New clutch went in at 158K, guess why. The stock clutch can last that long on stock power, but a torque spike like chipped cars do will eat one up.

FWIW, I'm past 175K now and I still hold good vacuum and compression.

    I'd say do it.

I asked this same question on here a couple months ago. I was told that if your turbo is in at least decent condition and you have good compression numbers in all 4 cylinders then there should be no issue (other than old crusty vacuum hoses). I have 116k miles on mine and chipped it maybe at 113k. There are people whom replace thier turbos with an older used one w/less miles just to be on the safe side. If that is the issue that has you shaky, then find a used turbo for maybe $150 shipped tops or rebuild your current one.
