    1.8T... Which Spark plugs???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i purchased an 98 A4 1.8T (Quattro) recently and have done some much needed maintenance. (Cat Gasket, Vacuum lines, Valve cover gasket, coolant flush, fuel filter....)

I looked at the spark plugs once and they looked okay (they are those 4-prong plugs), but i cant remember the make. Now i was wondering, are these right for the A4, or are there any better ones that i can use.

In case it matters the car is not chipped ... yet.

Sorry i should add this is a 5speed... I think that means AWM correct?

Just stick with the Bosch OEM F7LTCR (not used in 00+). Then when you get your car chipped, change to Bosch F6DTC (they are also used by many BT and BAT owners). These plugs last a lot longer than others would suggest such as the NGK BKR6E.

Looked into those plugs and came across an article saying they are replaced by FR7LDC+. Also i added that the car is an AWM.

So are these plugs good to use?

And what are the drawbacks to putting in the F6DTC even though it is not chipped yet.

So do you own a 2001 or 1998?

    Re: 1.8T... Which Spark plugs???

AWM means it is a 2001 model 1.8t. AWM is the engine. You have an AEB engine. There is nothing wrong with putting in the Bosch F6DTC on a stock motor. I just do not know how it would drive in the wintertime. Before I got my ECU flashed, I placed the F6DTC plugs in and drove maybe an hour to my destination with no issues.

And the replacement part numbers always differ from the factory number. As a replacement part number is not the same as the one given at the factory. If you are to ever replace a part on your car with something that is not used from another car part from the factory, you will get a replacement part with a replacement part number. Those come from the company itself (in this case, Bosch) and not the the assembly line from the car factory (in this case, the Audi assembly line).

As I stated before, get the Bosch F7LTCR and change them to Bosch F6DTC when you get your ECU flashed or chipped. And I have no idea how your car would drive in the wintertime with the F6DTC with stock ECU settings.

    Re: 1.8T... Which Spark plugs???

Thanks for the reply, you are a huge help.

Sorry i didn't know what the AWM, and AEB were, like i said i purchased this car just over a month ago, so i've been trying to do as much reading as possible.

I'm going to pick up some of those Bosch F7LTCR plugs as i'm not sure if i will be chipping it this year with winter coming.

And yes it is a 98

ngk bkr6e or 7e. I had OEM boschs in and switched. I notice the car runs more smoothly.

Not to thread jack, but I am now considering getting the BK6RE for the winter time. But what should I gap them at on a flashed ECU? Thanks!

Edit: Ok, I know that it is .028" for chipped cars, but I read that people run different gaps. And I dare to be different. With that being said, I am just going with the .030" gap.

I run with a .030" gap on mine with no problems.

Thanks for the response. I actually got them and gapped them at .030". But then decided to just install them for the real winter season and change oil at the same time. If I like them, I will run the BK7RE in the summer.

I used to switch back and forth with my plugs. I just run the BK6RE's summer and winter. I would switch more often when I lived in Austin a few years ago. Illinois summer's are pretty mellow.

Since copper is one of the best conductors of electricity and one of the best heat dicipators, copper is king. They don't last nearly as long as a plat plug, but at $1.89 each, who gives a shit.

    Re: 1.8T... Which Spark plugs???

Those of you who are saying they replaced one plug brand for another brand, and the latter ran smoother.. you guys realize replacing old plugs with new ones usually have that kind of result? Unless you were comparing new plugs from one brand, with new plugs from another.. it's not a fair comparison, correct me if I'm wrong.

With that said, when I replaced my ngk's with bosch plugs, the bosch plugs ran much smoother... but my ngk's needed replacing.

IK24's here. Run them all year around and ~never replace them.

I ran IK27's for a while but those will foul real, real easily in the winter. I used to use 7e's but got sick of changing them.
