License plate / plate cover screw size?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My new vanity plates came in the mail today, and I'm going to order the AZ plate covers, my only question is, what size screws do I need for both the front and back covers?

The ones on my car now are some rusty ones from god know's where.

    Thanks!

Re: License plate / plate cover screw size?

You need a short metric screw. The size is called M6.

You can also order them from ECS Tuning. Bottom of page, "license plate hardware."

I bought black socket cap M6's at Lowes and Dremmeled them down to the length I needed.

My new plate is on the car now! I just got some M6 1.0 10mm that worked great from Lowe's today. I still plan on ordering some nicer ones soon. I'm just glad to know the size of them now. Thanks.

I would think the 8mm would be enough, unless you have an extra thick plate cover....

Reviving again.... This thread helped get me started, but FWIW, after two trips to the hardware store, I'll share my experience in case it helps anyone prevent that second trip.

    My car... new-to-me B7 - '08 A4 Avant 3.2.

    Rear license plate bolts: M6-1.0x12mm

    Front license plate bolts: M4-.7x12mm

I used socket cap bolts. So you can have your wrenches ready, the M6 (rear) screws will take a 5mm wrench. The M4 (front) ones require a 3mm wrench.

Small bummer for me. My hardware store carried black zinc plated bolts, but not matching washers. The frame & plate mounting holes were fine for the M6 screw heads, but were too big for the M4 ones. Worse, the 'matching' M4 washers were also too small. So, I've got some ugly 1/4" SS washers against my black plate frame up front. Sigh. In any case, 12mm-length screws were long for both, and I now have extra 16mm bolts that I'm too lazy to return. All said, even with the extra bolts and washers, total cost was just over $6.

If there is a choice of stainless, go that route. If you don't, be prepared to drill out your screws in a few years.

^ Those are sweet! I know I'm intruding here since I'm a B7 owner, but I sure wish you had those in an M4-.7x12mm size for the front of my car.

Sorry to revive the dead but a quick question since the bolts holding the crappy dealer frames are huge and loose...6mm-1.0 x 12mm from Lowes would fit correct? I can get a pack of 8 from there for less than $10. Will be allen not Torx like ECS but a helluva lot cheaper.

Also trying to decide if I want to go frameless for the rear or not, hmm

I understand that but 4 of those is $3, but S&H is $8. More than twice the cost of the actual parts.

This is 9 times out of 10 the case with all ECS orders. Great company, but they need to work on the shipping rates.

We can't ship things with stamps boys. I'm not sure you can get much cheaper than around 8 dollars to ship anything these days that isn't "Free Shipping"

When has cost of shipping ever been reflected by the cost of the product you're buying? If you feel 8 dollars its too much you can always add them to a larger order next time.

Why? usps flate rate would probably save you guys money on the small orders. We use them all the time when shipping small products. But i do agree that i don't understand why people expect the shipping to be always less than the part its not like you guys are the ones charging to be out delivering.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

We do use flat rate shipping through USPS. But there is also handling included. We still have to pay the guy to pick and package your order since we are a business and our goal is to make money.

So with that in mind it's pretty difficult to bring the cost of shipping down below 7-8 dollars. Eating a handling fee might not have an effect on some one who doesn't move a lot of product but when you get large quantities of orders everyday it will definitely add up.

After picking out the nicest, shiniest, gleaming-est M6 bolts from our stash of factory Toyota bolts and using them to hold on my rear plate, I was horrified when they turned to rusty crap after 2 years. Horrified, I tell you.

I purchased some stainless ECS "Slim Line" bolts and [after including them in a larger order for shipping reasons] I couldn't be happier. They also hold on the nifty plate frame that ECS gave me for free.

Lesson 1: Stainless bolts are the business.
Lesson 2: Toyota OEM bolt quality sucks big time and are decidedly not the business.
