    1.8t Rev R Coils vs 4.2 S4 Rev Q Coils

I got wind of discussion about the S4 B6 Red coilpacks running on a 1.8t, that the amount of voltage that they provide is higher and are better made in general. Can anyone confirm this, or is anyone running them on their car.

I would run the hitachi bolt downs if I were you... Went thru many different coil packs on my Golf, put in hitachis and Ive been good for 40k now

I'm looking for a stronger voltage out of the coils as well, not only longer life. I was looking at nology powercore, but they only have the setup for 3 pin coils for now.

I bought the revised R a couple weeks ago and actually wish I went with the Hitachi's. It does not bother me too much though. I will just go with the Hitachi's when I build my motor. And if you do decide on the R version, you could get them cheaper than ECS has them listed for (Link).

As for the S4 coil, I only do things to my vehicle I know another has done sucessfully. So, really could not comment on any other coils except the OEM ones or Hitachi. Or the ones onemoremile has. But those bad boys are like $750 or so.

Only one way to find out, slap them on there and see what happens.

Does it matter what year your 1.8T is for what the best type of coil is? I'm running originals on my '99 and thinking of replacing them or at least keeping some spares on hand, I'm only chipped so I just want the cheapest, best bang for the buck. Is the hitachi's (link?) the best?

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. The only reason I bought the R version ones is I had one bad coil pack (L version). And I figured just upgrade instead of buying 1 replacement L version.

The ecu controls how much voltage the coil pack supplies to the spark plug. I still run my stock hitachi coil packs on my car and they have to supply plenty of voltage to spark 600whp pushing 32psi.

Even changing the gap increases voltage which is why it is best to run as big of a gap on your plugs as possible without getting blow out. Dont know why people keep saying to use .028 gap when .032 works and allows for more spark since the resistance is increased. Even the F6DTC bosch tri plugs have a .032 gap.

The Hitachi/Beru is a 4 wire coil pack so it wont work on your ndbw 99. They only work on the 2000+.

Are the red ones for the B6 S4 4.2 the same ones for the A6/A4 3.0 liter which is also red?

Because Purems has them on the site for $29.95 each, 06C905115L

They also have the Hitachi/Beru set for 29.95 each. These can also be ordered in sets of 4 which is how I bought my spare set from Mike.

I tried cross referencing the coil packs on ECS's page, the A6/A4 3.0 don't have a revision letter like the B6 S4 ones do. They do cost the same on their site though. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they're all interchangeable I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be. I will give them a go in a few weeks. I will take logs of the old coils and logs of the new coils to see if there is a substantial difference between the two. I spoke to my friend again, I misunderstood what he said originally. The Red coilpacks provide a higher RESISTANCE, not a higher voltage.
