Who here has expierence with micro polishing gear sets and cryoing them as well?

I want to rebuild my transmission over the winter but while its out and all apart i would like to build it up a bit. Any thoughts or ideas as to what can be done to make these transmissions stronger, smoother, better? I know i want to cryo my gears for strength and REM micro polished for smoothness, are there any other things that can be done to make this tranny better??

I think all that cryo treatment is a waste of money .. wouldnt invest in that .. the stock tranny will hold really high hp as is .. I would buy the upgraded syncros/clips ect from JHM though

Well I would rather spend around $1000 for his upgrade instead of a tranny like Stasis thats going to cost you $5000

im going to be rebuilding a tranny soon and plan to go with a cryo rem treatment ... its pretty expensive so i might just do it to 1-2-3 gears

did you get any quotes on how much cryo REMing everything is? or even a place willing to talk to you? i emailed a couple places just by finding them through google, but no reply - a phone call would probably be more effective with those types of companies ...

I have connections with cryo and working on REM coating. I have a shop in leominster so once i find out a short drive from Boston and we could get it done together...

The trannys are stout in these cars. I have 130k of pure abuse on mine. My videos of launching and racing only show a fraction of what my trans has been through. My car has been stage 3 since 40k miles as well. The only thing I did was rebuild it with the contents of my kit at 89k miles.

My transmission still shifts smoothly. However I do notice that on some rebuilds 1st gear tends to show some wear and pitting, more than any other gear. So when it is apart hardening or cryo treating would probably help reduce wear and longevity. I think the stock gears are up to 500+whp with no issues or even more if you don't beat on it hard. Also hardening tends to be a good idea when road racing since the gears and gear oil get nice and hot and used longer than normal.

Until I take my trans apart I can't tell you how well it has held up for sure since it is quiet and still shifts good. But I would bet that the gears are pretty beat at this point.

Bottom line, hardening and or cryo treating gears is probably NOT needed for 90+% of S4 owners from what I have personally seen.

In my car I have sheared in half 3 front axles, twisted another and blew my rear differential to pieces internally and I still have the basically original 130k mile trans. I have had other customers break stuff, but never a trans yet (other than the 1-2 shift collar). Knock on wood.

Hope this info and first hand experience helps with your decision.

They can also send out your parts to get cryo treated. I may have 1st through 3rd gears done when my 1.8 trans is apart this winter.

Actually all you need to do is find any local heat treating or cryo treating place and give it to them. There is no special secret, just knowing where to send it, look online and in your lcoal yellow pages. They charge you by weight as well.

If you take it to any shop they will just be sending it to one of these places and marking it up.

As an FYI we normally charge $1000 for the ENTIRE trans to be cryo and REM coated, keep in mind certain parts can not be REM treated, but the shafts, selecters, syncros, gears, hubs... all benefit from the process.

If you can handle the teardown and rebuild, go for it do it yourself .

Most people don't like to mess around with gear boxes and dont even have the proper tools to do it correctly.
