    Valve Cover Studs

Has anyone replaced their valve cover studs on a B5 A4 1.8? Whoever replaced the valve cover gasket before me stripped a few of the threads on the studs. What is the process to replace the studs? Just twist the old ones out and twist the new ones in? Thanks

Can you run a die over the threads to clean them up or are they gone?

They look like they are pretty much gone.

    Re: Valve Cover Studs

they just unscrew out of the head like any other stud. You can put 2 nuts on them back to pack or use a stud puller. I suppose in a worst case you could try channel locks, but i'd do just about anything before doing that.

Take 2 of the valve cover nuts (the ones you removed) and opposite lock them onto the stud.
Get a size 10mm spanner and move in an anticlockwise direction with the bottom nut.
    Stud should come out nicely.

Might not work if the stud is already stripped on the top- but i suppose one could always channel lock out the already junk thread, and use the reverse of this technique to install the good one.

I like the stud puller sets, but for occasional use they are a bit spendy.
