What should I look for in an S6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I found a 2002 S6 pretty close by and am tempted to go and take a look, its listed for $15,900 and has 89k on the clock. What are the common issues to look out for if I go to have a look around the car? Is $15.9k asking too much for something with 89k miles on it?

Its an Avant and looks like it has leather interior, I know that Alcantara is available, but is leather more common? Any other pointers? Thanks.

Re: What should I look for in an S6

if its a personal ad, i would have a trusted mechanic inspect it. i bought my 02 s6 recently about 2 months ago and am loving it. you should definitely look into the timing belt service and everything else around it if you are already at 89k miles. you can porbably work the guy down from $15.9k given the gas prices and its a V8. other than that, is it modded? there arent much options for the v8 so you probably wont have to worry too much about the modding aspect. but i would ask jsut in case. the v8 is a solid engine and is pretty reliable, its just hungry is all.

From the pictures it looks pretty standard, it is at a dealer, but not an Audi dealer.

Hopefully that link works, I am not sure on the V8 yet as I have a long commute, but it is very tempting, and will have plenty of room for the kids!

Can't stress this enough. Not to mention it's a rather hefty price to get it done if it decides to leg to on ya too.

a lot of room - yes i dfinitely agree with that .

i dont know what your definition is for a long commute but if youre not ready to see 16-19 mpg then dont even consider the v8.

Been there, done that, not an Audi, but it was not a cheap job, the thing that p*ssed me off the most was I had it booked in the following month to be replaced anyway.

At the moment about 130 miles a day, 16-19MPG might just put me off a lot, shame really. But then again I don't want to buy something like an S6 and put a huge amount of miles on it and end up with it worthless. Stuck trying to decide on what I want at the moment, its annoying not being able to decide. I am also looking at shortening the commute, which makes me look at things like a V8.

For that drive, get the S6, but also get an old Civic or VW TDI to commute. You'll save moles on the S6 and you'll appreciate it more when you drive it on weekends.

By the way, if you get one, remember that the S6 has a SUPER touchy gas pedal. That's part of where the shitty mileage comes from.

I looked at an S6 the other day. It had 63K on it and they were asking $14,500. It was in primo shape, and that dark silver color. I was mighty tempted, but I was going to take it hard on my 4.2. This was at an Audi dealer too(tinley park).

YIKES!!! 130 miles per day??? that sounds like my old commute!!! for that I would definitely recommend looking into a B6 A4 (1.8T) - you can get one for close to $10k. Invest in a Stage 3+kit with APR ($5K) and you have yourself the funnest commute with a good looking car to boot!!!

One of the biggest reasons i put up with the 110 miles commute was drivign my Stage3+ b6. I am really lucky I only got 1 speeding ticket and no accidents in my 1.5 years of doing that long asssss commute.

I would say get a B5S4 and Go stage 3 with that for even more fun (something I am tempted to do later on when the prices drop even more) but I think the stage3 b5 s4s have too many issues with reliability (at least from what I read).

just for old times sake - im going to post a pic of my stage 3+ b6 ...

    (she is missed every day)

oh and i forgot to add ... they come in avants as well .... I would have kept mine if i had bought an avant in the first place ... but i wasnt thinking that far a head ...

Yeah, the commute sucks, I am hoping to find something closer to home. I had been looking at the B6 A4 but need more room (2 kids in car seats). I might take a look at an A4 Avant, I saw a black USP Avant the other day, very nice looking.

Well you could always look at an a6 avant. its pretty much the sme thing as the s6 but comes with a smaller engine (4.2L is also available). As you can read from most of the folks here, the funner = more options for modding is the 2.7T. But if you dont do that car right you could possibly have a lot of problems with the turbos conking out. Its pretty much the same engine as the B5 S4s.

There is someone here with an A6 that is nicely modded: M-Avant is his name I think.

Re: What should I look for in an S6

The more I think about it, the more I think that my commute realistically puts me off getting something like an S6, I have found the following A6 nearby, does it look like a good deal?

    http://skylineoffairfax.com/detail-2...o-3269056.html

What areas should I pay attention to if I go and take a look? its not at an Audi dealer so not going to be CPO, but looks like a decent price. Is the timing belt service on the A6 at 100k? I should have also asked this, how reliable is the A6 as a daily driver? the thing that is putting me off my current vehicle is how unreliable its proving (despite the fact I really enjoy the car), I don't want to get into the same boat with a different (and probably more expensive to repair) vehicle. Thanks.
