    Clutch Diagnosis?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I think I am in need of a new clutch, or a component. I have about 90,000 miles on my A4 now, and I have noticed a gradual fading of the bite in my clutch system. basically, the clutch is worn out to the point where I can't get a smooth shift ever. Either I have to ride the clutch to shift somewhat smoothly and the car hardly accelerates like it used to or I can just pop it and buck the car before I can actually get the car going. Also, it seems like i have about 1/2 an inch of play to engage, disengage the clutch. Can someone help to diagnose what is worn out and what I will need to replace??

    Re: Clutch Diagnosis?

Cruise at like 30 and have it in 5th and floor it, if it revs up its time for a clutch.

    Re: Clutch Diagnosis?

Thanks... Yea I also heard that if you put the ebrake on, in 4th gear and try to gradually let off the clutch, it should stall immediately... If it doesn't, time for a new clutch. I'm taking it in either way this week, I'm just trying to go into a new mechanic (I just moved to Miami and don't know who to take my car to) with some knowledge of whats wrong with the clutch... Thanks for the help.

    Re: Clutch Diagnosis?

Any good word on what brand to buy for the Clutch Kit. Without sacrificing the smoothness of my ride(i.e. no race clutch needed)??? Maybe something more beefier than OEM.

check rear main seal, yes, replace if not leaking, no. My philosoply with seals like those are if it's not leaking, don't touch it. Its not uncommon for those to not seat properly and leak again if you replace them. The mechanic who works on my father's 1973 P-car has had to redo the crank seal three times b/c it would not seat properly and continued to drip oil.

I have just over 90k on my stock clutch too and it aint feeling too good. I will be ordering the Southbend stage 1 clutch tomorrow and a new oem pilot bearing online for $20 or so. I'm APR 1+ and I dont plan on going any faster.

    Re: Clutch Diagnosis?

Does anyone know of a good "spirited driving/Sport" clutch at a decent price I can use to replace my OEM? Also, how do you properly break in a new clutch?

Is there much difference on the clutch for my 3.0 as opposed to the 1.8 or 2.0? Also, whats the big difference between the southbend stage 2, 2+, and the 3? What did it cost to have the clutch installed if u remember???

    Re: Clutch Diagnosis?

just reading your thread here and from what you have stated what your looking for in a clutch i would go with AWE RS4 LWFW/clutch combo for $1200. if thats to much coin for you, try Southbend OFE stg3 clutch for $550. I'v tried both and have instl. four SB OFE's and two RS4 LWFW/clutch combo's. Pedal feel is very close to stock feel with both clutch's and no chatter from the LWFW. the labour on the clutch job is the same no matter which clutch you chooz so buy something worth it, while going thru the whole process.

besides a supercharger for the 3liter the best set up i think you can do for the 3liter is as follows.

    LWFW/clutch combo$1200
    Stasis cntr-diff-chng$550

you'll love every minute of this set up just ask thooz that have it.

What kind of performance change will I get out of a clutch? Given the huge difference in price between the RS4 and SB clutch, is there much difference in the performance characteristics? Also, what change will I feel with the LW flywheel??? How much is the LWFW separately, and will it need to be put in when the clutch is being replaced??? Whats the big difference with changing out the center diff? Im new to changing out a Clutch system and all the help I can get is appreciated... Thanks King.

Sorry to thread jack, but which is a good test? Starting from 4th? Or 50mph on 3rd and check if it revs?
