Are there any autocross events that do not require an SCCA license in the bay area?

Also on some of the websites I see that it would be autocross event ______ round __ is it ok to join these events late or did you have to participate in the previous event to continue?

    Thanks in advance

None of the autox events require a SCCA license I believe (SFR might be different, they are always packed)

Try checking out the sacramento events.

You can go to either or both days at autox, They are there for the national guys who do every event, and also to keep weekend race days spread out.

Pick an autox local, Tell them you just want the temp license for a day (its an extra $15 IIRC), ask for an instructor, (bring a helmet if you have one) borrow a helmet from the timing booth by using your license as colateral. Follow your instructor around and they will show you the ropes.

Autox is very informal, but be on time for registration, give yourself 1/2 an hour to unload your car, Check the online guides to prep your car and go.

FYI I suggest keeping your spare tire in and having at least 1/2 a tank. Audi's need the extra rear weight for turn in and proper balance, but thats something to worry about after you've had a year of it. :)

Any more questions feel free to ask, if I dont answer, PM me. I autox regularly with the SCCA and PCA (Porsche club of america, I have a 914 v8 as well.) and have been doing it for years. (I love taking my audi to the PCA events on street tires and beating 90% of the street tire cars!)

bay area events... they till be typically SCCA ones, and you will need to be a member, they have weekend memberships for $15.

PCA, you need to be a member or own a P-car.

Out of bay area, and you have more options, typically at Marina, near monterey.

and you can go to any event, it doesn't matter what event it is.

the scca memberhsip is relatively cheap, and its good for a full 365 days, its not tied to a calendar year or anything. its a lot of fun, and people are pretty friendly. come say hi if you show up at the next scca one.

    Re: Auto X....

NorcalPB, with respect to some of your questions. You can run in any of the SFR Championship rounds (SCCA membership or temp membership required). It's okay to jump into it in the middle of the season. It just means that you'd be behind in points for a regional championship if that's what you're after. SFR SCCA is about to start it's Slush Series (the winter series but haven't had rain in one for the past few years).

If you'd like to try other organizations that don't require a membership, check out www.norcalufo.org, www.gglotus.org and www.americanauto-x.com. Also, take a look at www.sfrscca.org/solo2 and look up the solo events calander.

Norcal UFO is a friendly group that runs at Marina but not as difficult courses as I'm accustomed to. Not saying that they're not good, it's just that I've been competing regularly at the national level. Dennis and Peggy keep the courses flowing since most of their patrons are pretty new to the autox scene. The Golden Gate Lotus Club has it's own autox series and run in Marina as well.

American AutoX, it's run by multi-National Champions. They run their events at Atwater but have done an event at Alameda. Until recently, due to Castle AFB paddock closure, they used to have very fast, very technical courses aimed at the V8 enthusiast. This year, they ran in a very small lot at Castle that didn't seem too fun. But their last event, they ran at Alameda and had an awesome/fast/technical course.

Either way, hope to see you at an SCCA event. I run in a pretty quick Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS, although I won't be running that car until next season. I'll be driving a STS2 MR2 for the Slush season.
