    GT71r Review (UPDATE: VIDEO!!)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This is for people thinking about going BT so we don't have thread after thread come up saying "Should I go big turbo?" (Kinda like I used to do )

All right, so I've had my turbo and all supporting mods installed now for 2 weeks and after running into numberous problems the first week, I've finally been able to do A LOT of everyday-sort-of driving.

The 71r hits full boost (22psi for me) at about 4200-4400 rpm, will spike to 23psi and will hold about 20-21psi until redline. The power difference was what I expected and more. Coming from just a Stage 1 flash though, it almost doubles the CHP. If I could do it all over again, the only thing I would do different would be to go with the Evolution Racewerks Competition FMIC instead of the Racetec.

All in all, it was worth every penny and I would recommend the Elim. turbos to anyone who would like 250-280AWHP on pump gas (320-360 at the flywheel).

Any questions or comments are welcome!

What SPS settings are you currently using? Your coolant issues are fixed? No headgasket problems?

Those dyno's were run on race gas.

That is a race gas number for those set-ups.

Coolant issues were fixed and no headgasket problems! I'm running boost 7 and timing 4 with no CF's in 78*F. I then ran timing 5 in the same weather and I got CF's up to 3. So I'm just running it conservatively right now. That night I ran timing 5 in 67*F and got no CF's.

    Re: GT71r Review

Where did you get your kit, price?

What kind of problems did you have at first? Were they relatively easy fixes?

Why did you go BT? Do you occasionally race the car or is it for street fun?

    Biggest complaint...?

    Have fun!
calm the fuck down. it's all relative.

    Re: GT71r Review

I got it through Greg (400HPA4) and I really don't remember what the final price was on everything because I did EVERYTHING at once. There's a thread I started and it has pretty much everything I did. Search "My big project" or something and you'll find it.

I was having coolant leaking issues but we found what was causing it. First, the thermostat was bad and the seal broke on it causing coolant to go everywhere. Then, the water pump seal was bad so I just did water pump (with metal impeller, thanks Doug!) and timing belt. Then there was a bad coolant sensor and after that was replaced, everything was fixed and no more leaky-leaky.
I will track the car occasionally (about 4-5 times a year) but I have yet to track it since the turbo has been put in.
My biggest complaint is nothing yet. Those coolant problems were just regular maintainance issues so I have had nothing to complain about so far!

Good deal. Glad to see you logging the car . If you can run more timing advance (block 003) with CFs of 3 on timing 5 versus timing 4 then I'd run timing 5. I, personally, am comfortable with CFs of 3 but this is your car so do whatever you are comfortable with.

You replace the coolant sensor in the back of the head? That one dies very frequently and makes you run super rich. Use the 'green' top one.

I could have sworn I hit 21-22psi at 4,000rpm on my 2.0L but I can not remember. I haven't driven the car in a while and only ran high boost once or twice with my tune the way it was. Those times I was busy looking at the road to get a good pull(s) for logging purposes rather than staring at my boost gauge.

    Re: GT71r Review (UPDATE: VIDEO!!)

What CF's are you looking for? Because 3's are fine in my eyes. When I bump timing or when I forget to bring it back on warmer days, I'll see 6's at times.
And as an FYI, there is a lot you can do to make the Racetec more efficient. It's all about re-directing air flow and reducing turbulance. After configuring my center opening to direct air ONLY through the FMIC, and after getting rid of any side entry between it and the A/C core, my temps dropped big time.
My IAT are never, even on the hottest days and hard runs, running over 40, and I'm usually within 5-7 degrees of ambient, and always back to 5-7 degrees from ambient after every shift.
The Racetec is a good unit IMHO. I'd love to have an ER Comp, but I'd bet my setup now is running temps at or damn near close to what an ER Comp would do.
What are your IAT's? Not really FMIC-related, but what about EGT?
And I agree on the 0-60 time. You're babying the shifts, letting off the gas, and losing your spool as a result. While I'm sure the car can run like a beast with your set up, that video isn't showing it. If I beat mine, I'm at 60 in just several seconds tops.

Nice video. It looks like you're running just fine to me although I get through my RPM's a lil faster . I also noticed that you're shifting slower than my auto would but I'll give you the benefit of your shifting is being hindered by the fact that you are also holding the camera.

    I just don't want to blow a motor so I figured if my CF's are 0, I have no problems. I haven't logged IAT's or EGT's yet. I've only logged blocks 003, 020 and 115.

There was a dude at Waterfest with APR Stage 3+ and NO supporting mods (stock exhaust and SMIC), and I looked at his bay and shit was just hooked up really wrong....
He only did like @210 to the wheels, lol. And he was all pissed and saying he was going to sue APR for false advertizing or something. Me and Martini just laughed.

Cool. There is more to blowing an engine than CF on timing, though. My APR ran 0's all the time when I first installed it. I got sick of having the same tune as the guy in high elevations or real hot weather, so I bumped timing. Runs a lot quicker now, and I personally am happy with CF's under 6.
If you really are WOT in your video, you spool later than I'd expect. I can't speak for the other APR guys, but I'm at 21psi at about 3950rpm.

Yea that's why I asked to see his 115. Martini posted logs this week hitting 20+psi around 3700.

My third is a long one, but my first and second are redlined so fast. It's really hard to keep first gear in check without going WAY over redline. It seems like the second I leave the clutch out in 1st it's redlined.
Real nice thing about going BT is that you feel power come on more as you approach redline. You really have to change shift points from when you were K0x. You don't have to worry about the turbo losing boost in higher rev bands.

A GTRS's spool is more inline with the 3+ setup
