i know it has been covered 1000 times, but i need to ask this specific question:

I have Bi-Xenon housings made for a D1S, the ones with the built in ignitors, but the issue is that an HID kit for this bulb setup costs more than my housings, so can i run a D2S or anything in these housings?

Yes, the D2S lamp base fits the D1S lamp holder, but you need the igniter that fits onto the D2S to make it functional. Another option is to get a pair of D1 lamp base/igniter, that take a D2 lamp inserted into the D1 igniter. That allows the use of D2 lamps while staying D1 as functional fit. It's also possible to fit D2 projectors instead of the D1 projectors. That is what I am running with.

Which HID "kit" are you looking at? Only OEM parts should be considered IMO. "Akinaboy" sells retrofit kits using all OEM components.

Use OE Valeo ballasts, they fit the housings. You also need the ballast to D1S lamp connecting cables, one for each housing. Akinaboy's "HID Concepts" web store can set you up with the ballasts and cables. Also get the $30 D1S lamps, then there is no mods needed to fit anything in the housings.

With this setup the housings are mostly plug and play, but the harness on the passenger side needs to be lengthened about 8 inches, and the SAI air tube from the air cleaner needs to be heated and flattened a bit to fit the housing on the pass side. You don't need to recode anything.

The only costly item is the ballast. Get the pair of OE Valeo ballasts from HIDconcept for 220$ but not for D1S bulbs, select the D2S option. Then get the D2S bulbs from DDM for example for only 35$ for a pair. Mounting D2S bulbs into D1S bulb holders isn't a problem, you just hold them with a screw, like so:

The problem with cheap aftermarket ballasts is that they don't seal the bi-xenon housing like the OE ballast does, which means you'd have to make/get custom made covers for the back of the housing and mount the aftermarket ballasts somewhere else, because the bi-xenon housings fit very tightly in our cars, so nothing can stick out past the flat cover on the back.

OE Valeo ballasts = by far the best solution for bi-xenon housings.
