motor knocking(HELP!!!)

Last night I was driven home and my cluster went off saying it needed oil. I stopped at a near by autozone and bought some oil. (5w-30) full synthetic. Poured some in and continued my ride to my house. By the time I got home I heard a real loud knocking coming from my motor. Turned off the car opened up the hood looked around to see if i saw anything didnt see anything (no leaks).
So am asking does any1 know what could be the problem.

because you drove on low oil you developed rod knock? deff. can happen due to lack of oil

I am no expert, but if it were me I would change the oil asap (full synthetic) and add Lucus stabilizer in the oil. Then see if knocking persists. If it does, then I would then take it to a mechanic.

Maybe a mechanic can chimme in and tell you the proper route to take.

your car would still move with a spun bearing....it wold be very loud but it would still move as normal.....you most likly got a rod know for lack of oil

What kind of oil did you have in there before? Synthetic should only be mixed with the same type and vice versa.

mixing oils wouldnt have cause that.

you can mix whatever oils you want makes no difference.....

When it came on i parked on the side n checked the level. The level was real low.

The oil level right now is a little over the limit.

The only noise ive heard is the tappin am haven going on right now. I havent driven the car in about 2 days. I started it up lastnight and the tapping was going on.

When you say you checked did you leave the car to stand for a while as it would show a low if you just stopped and popped the dip stick.

When I say tappy I mean like the sound of the cam tappets.

Anyways I will tell what I did.

I like you got an oil light and I slung in more oil, my mistake was that I put in too much and the engine clanged away like it was a clapped out diesel.

Got her home and did the engine diesel flush thing when you drain the engine oil then fill her to the brim with diesel and leave her over night.

Drain the engine filled her to the normal engine level with cheap oil and a new cheap filter and left her to tick over for an hour. I have to say when she started nothing sounded different but after 5 min she sounded quite normal.

Drained her again and put in another oil filter but a good one this time and fresh good oil. The problem I found was at start-up she was real head tappy but after less then 30 seconds would quieten down to normal but after the oil got hot I would get a audible tappet noise after long runs.

2 weeks ago I changed the oil pump and pick-up pipe and she’s like a new engine no issue what so ever and my mate said the issue was a lazy oil pump struggling to pump the oil round the engine.

well to be honest my engine sounds lik a diseal, da knocking n all. but i really cant figure out whats the problem. i was told to empty the oil out a little bit and then start up again to see if it continues to knock, but am scared i might just mess something up real bad.
but am going to take ur advice. ama go home and empty it out. but am kinda confused on the diseal part. do i just poor it in n let it sit, or should i start up the car also?

I took some oil out of mine when I realised I had over filled her a little but this made no difference at all and yep she sounded dreadful and to be honest I thought I would need a new engine.

yea thats how i feel right now also. Thank God am in the military ama drive ma car on base prob 2morrow n put her up on a lift and prob look around and see if i see anything.

Well I would go the oil pump route and flush her out. I just don’t see you have a choice your not burning oil and from the sound your not loosing it as it would be all over the under tray. I think your pump is on it way out hence the oil light which would show up an oil light like mine, and the fact you did not let the oil drain back to the sump to get a good reading gave you the impression of low oil which would have meant too much oil in the engine when you topped it up causing your issue of the clanking engine which I add happened to me.

Depends on how far I have to say I did drive mine home for about 20 miles (I thought at the time my engine was dead) and did the diesel thing then did the pump some 2 months later.

Drain the oil for sure maybe run a flush through it the top her off to normal level and let her sit on tick over for a while (I left her for 1 hr) and see if she sounds better then see if you recon she would be good to go.

Now from what you say you got an oil light which at the time the car sounded normal and only after you topped her off did the noise start which would be what happened to me.

If anything I have said happened to did not happen to you then I would say you have a different issue to mine but from what I read it sound the same.

yes its pretty much the samething. I really didnt hear the noise till i stopped at my apartment. n i noticed this real loud noise coming from the engine bay. the rpms were also running pretty high while it was just sitting dere(around 1200rpm)

I turned the car on, its reving at normal RPMs. I guess ill figure whats wrong wit it wen i take it to the mechanic. Am still open to suggestions on things i should check out

How can you obviously see that there isn't a spun bearing by draining the oil? Theres absolutely no way. Thats great that its revving at normal rpms but is it still knocking? You probably spun a bearing by now if you didnt before...

welll obviously u cant, but there should be metal particles coming out threw the oil which would indicate if there is a spun bearing. obviously you havent spun a bearing to actually know. By the way i havent been driven the car.

there wont necesarily be metal in the oil, if you just marred the bearing really bad there wont be.

are u sure its not the timing chain tensioner noise, it sounds like that when it goes bad or going bad..

i dunno, i dropped it off last night to the mechanic his suppose to be checking it this morning lets see what he tells me. hopefully its not as serious as i think.

Does it only happen at idle? If yes, I would bet its a cam chain tensioner. When they go, the car sounds really really bad. Where is the knocking coming from in the motor, front/back?

I replaced my friends cam chain tensioner. She was having very similar problems. She was also 2qts low when I checked it out first.

I think my problem was i over filled it wit oil. The oil light went off and right away I thought it was very low on oil. I didnt check the level and right away i put 1 quart of oil in. The dumbest mistake I ever made.

alright so i took it to the shop. From my understanding theres a problem with the timing belt chain. They also was mentioning that audi has a recall on this problem. Does any1 know anything about that recall?
