For those that change their own oil...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In my past oil changes i have simply disregarded this part but since i am in the middle of an oil change now i figure i will ask the question. does the metal ring that comes with the filter (not the crush washer) go on top of the filter around the barbs that fit into the filter cap? if so, what i its purpose?

    thanks!

Everytime i get a filter, it comes with a rubber ring that goes above the threads on the screw on lid. The crush washer for the drain bolt doesn't come with the filter and is purchased separately.

As far as a metal ring, it must be for a different application that uses the same filter as our cars.

Do you change your filter at every oil change (5k)? Personally, I change my oil every 5K (Mobil 1) and the filter every 10K.

I just don't think you're getting as much of the old oil out if you don't change the filter. Our oil changes are costly no matter what, so why not throw the filter in there? Not to mention, it doesn't get any easier to change than this.

How often are you supposed to change the oil? 5k?

According to Audi every 10k after the first 5k change but a lot of people do every 5k.

Re: For those that change their own oil...

I change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles. My first oil change was at 1,000 miles and then every 3,000 after that. I change the filter with every oil change and I use Motul Xcess 5/40.

There is no metal ring that comes with the filters on the RS4. I forgot what the S4 filters come with but I am almost 100% sure that the S4 filters don't have the metal ring either. What filter do you have?

    Hope this helps.

i changed the oil on my b5 and b6 and it was a huge mess! never done it on the s4 but i assume it would be much easier and cleaner since the oil filter is in such an easy position to get to.

just need to make sure you have a large enough oil catch pan because like 9 quarts are going to come out...lol

Re: For those that change their own oil...

Hey Drew, not only are 9 quarts going to come out, but it comes gushing out like the Fricken Niagara Falls. I'm not kidding. Alex's oil change dumped 2 quarts on the floor. No big deal since the floor is sealed and the oil wipes up without damaging the concrete. The second change was Channa's car and I got ready for it and it still swept me away like a fricken Tsumani. Can Audi make the drain plug any larger? It's not like that on the RS4.

Anyways, I am going to have to buy a new oil catch pan to accommodate Channa and Alex.

On a side note, I am usually spotless on oil changes, even though C And A probably don't think so.

Re: For those that change their own oil...

S4 filter comes with 2 metal rings I believe. One is really big and one is very small. No idea what they are for.
Pela oil extractor is good for taking the oil out then do the regular drain if you think there is some left in there. It won't be messy.

If i was going to do one and not the other, I'd change the filter every 5K and the oil every 10K. Seriously, change both every time. No more than 7.5K.

Why would you not change the filter with oil every time? Filter is less than $20 and since you have to spend at least $80 for good oil, what's another $20?

Honestly, I never really thought about it considering that I new it would be replaced at the dealer every 10K anniversary. I was mostly concerned with keeping fresh oil in the beast.

BTW, do you guys recommend the two oil filters (non-OEM) that ECS sells, or is it best to stick with the OEM version?

IMHO, either of those filters ECS sells are acceptable, and they are actually OEM, IIRC.

Re: For those that change their own oil...

I like to change the oil in my car about every 3k miles like Ed stated above. I prefer the OEM oil filter, its cheap enough where the ECS one isnt too appealing.

As stated above there are three pieces of hardware that come with the filter. The rubber o-ring which replaces the old one and two metal rings. Only one is used to replace the one on the oil nut. The other is for another application, it is not used.

The metal washer that came with my filter was not the same size as the one that was on drain plug. It was a smaller diameter. I was a little worried about replacing it. Should I have?

this thread is pretty funny because i just did my oil change this weekend, the hardest part was putting that damn plastic belly pan back on.

Anyway the little washers you are talking about I don’t believe go with the filter, I had the guy at my dealership pull up the diagram with the part breakdown and they weren’t mentioned at all. I just put in the filter and the rubber crush ring.

as for the Niagara falls comment, Jesus Christ you aren’t kidding, I went out and bought a 12qt pan for the oil to empty into. Well i pulled the plug and oil comes blowing out (I didn’t realize the hole in the pan was as big as the entire plug most cars it isnt). Needless to say the amount coming out of the pan was more than the catch pan could handles so i had a giant oil spill on the driveway.

I think i am going to get an extractor for this car, and my future cars i change oil to much to not get one...

5k should be good, I wouldn’t go 10 it just isn’t worth the risk esp as miles start getting higher.

The belly pan is such a PITA. For that reason i cut a nice 4x4" hole in the pan right below the drain plug. No more taking that thing off for me.

The Bentley Manual states that an extractor is not to be used to change the oil on an RS4. I don't know if it's the same for the S4's.

oh really, i wonder why that wasnt brought up in that DIY which was put up a while ago about the '17 min oil chang'

I think i am going to do the same thing with the belly plate, cut a section in it with a dremel next time...

I think changing the oil on a B6/B7 would be a nice easy DIY article. Anyone interested?

I have 1400 miles on my B7 now. I suppose I should change the oil myself right now. Thoughts? Necessary?

Until I moved to KC, I'd just save it up in a big drum until the next time I visited Toronto. Then I'd stop on the side of the 401 and dump it in some godforsaken part of Ontario.

Now I'm not sure WHAT I'll do with it!

    thaaaaat's nice.

well, I guess since Toronto sends all of its garbage to Michigan for landfill, we have it coming.

so let me get this straight...

9 quarts of oil at $9/bottle
    1 filter for $20
    oil dump fee $5

so $106 for an oil change, and you have to do it yourself?

WTF does the dealer charge for an S4 oil change? I have Audicare, so I have no idea.

    10 quarts of Castrol Synthetic 5w-40 - 5.75 x 10 = 57.50 before tax
    1 OEM Filter - $15.12

    Total - 72.62 before tax...

Not too bad, those were the prices of my last oil change.

LMAO - You can have the fucking Governor back, too. We don't like her. But we'll take your trash - Mmm.... smells like money!

It seems a time-honored tradition in MI to make fun of the Canadians - one I may never grow out of. But it's just for fun - one of my closest friends is a Canadian, and I actually went to Toronto on my honeymoon.

To answer your question, "yes." I've always wondered what a dealer charges. I guess I'll check. Molle Audi of Kansas City was rather vague, since they don't get a lot of S4s in for service (I think those take more oil than normal...). He first said $89.99, and when I said that seemed odd since the parts were probably pretty close to that by themselves, he said "Parts plus $22."

I got the oil from an eBay store called CargoLargo (Item# 390036620763), and I work for a dealership, so I got the filter for basically cost, but my dealership obtained the filter from CarQuest (it's a MANN filter).

So you can't get the deal I did on the filter, but there is still plenty of oil at that place in case you want to stock up! They shipped it really quickly - I was impressed.
