The B6/B7 go up and back. The B8 A5/S5 only goes up due to the fact is so big it doesn't fit into the roof.

I don't get why they just don't make it work like the roof in the A3, Q7, or the B8 A4 Avant. Those slide over the top of the roof instead of into it.

i love driving around with the sunroof back this is a deciding factore in purchasing the car IMO Audi has to do something about this for next years model

The reason they didn't make it a sliding roof is because of a) the size and b) the fact that to make it open they would have had to make it rake back off the roof-line (outside of the car) which would cause quite a bit of turbulence, airflow restriction and wind noise--things you don't want when you're cruising at 100+ mph.

It was decided that a larger (panoramic style) roof that only tilts was preferred to a much smaller one that also slides.

All A4s have tilting and sliding moonroofs. The 5-series model line is the only one with a non-sliding roof.

The A5 sunroof is so big the sharkfin is in the way, even if sliding on the outside.

If you're talking about a huge panaramic roof... the cheapo Scion tC trumps the A5 also.

Then add the complex sunroof of Pontiac G6 sedan as well as the Benz B-class.

....also...the Passat CC sunroof only tilts as well (no slide), just like the A5.

Me personally, if it tilts only (ie A5 & Passat CC).... it is not worth the extra unsprung weight.

the shape of the car doesn't allow the sunroof to slide in....and I bet Audi chose not to make it slide up because it makes the car look weird. BMW 650CI are the same way with no open feature.

The sunroof in your B8 A4 is also only about the same size as B6/7 sunroofs, and only half the size of the one in the A5.

I still think the A5/S5 sunroof has enough room to slide back over the top of the roof by 12-14" ala the spolier sunroof model. This would be about the same amount the B7/B8 sunroof opens. Maybe someone could photoshop it to see if it would look stupid or not.
