    Re: manual to auto

if you're strapped for time, then changing the transmission in your car isn't a great idea. This isn't the sort of thing you want a shop to do, nor the sort of thing that you want to undertake yourself unless you know what your doing and this thread clearly shows you don't. if you want to swap the mtx in your car for a atx there's a simple two step process to follow
    1) sell MTX B6
    2) buy ATX B6

    Re: manual to auto

why the hell not? it's your car, make it how you want it.

there have been plenty of folks starting threads about auto to manual. PM one of them and do a direct swap. they'll have all the parts you need, you have all the ones they need. make a friend and swap the parts. it is basically just the cost of your time, if you could get someone interested in the reverse swap, then i say go for it.

if you are handy with a wrench and have access to a shop you should be able to accomplish this in weekend. this is however a very involved job, and i would not suggest undertaking it unless you have previous experience and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty.

    Re: manual to auto

This is going to be a lot more hassle and cost a lot more money than it's worth. Your better off trading in your car for a manual.

    Re: manual to auto

yeah i knew there would be a little flaming, thats fine lol... it doesnt make sense to some, but my knee has been bothering me as of late.. and i have been looking around to trade it in and if i did that i would be losing a few grand because of what i owe compared to what they would give me... and yes i do have it listed for sale on autotrader.. i would love an a6 4.2 auto for the size and comfort level..

    Re: manual to auto

    lets see...

    ~ transmission
    ~ linkage
    ~ pedals
    ~ center console stuff
    ~ instrument cluster
~ ding ding ding!! new engine crankshaft!
~ and probably some other odds and ends

NOT worth it going in either direction. Sell the vehicle and get a new one with the right transmission that you want.

    Re: manual to auto

the crankshaft is diffrent for real?? that dosent make much sense, diffrent bolt pattern for flex plate vs flywheel??? just curious, anyhow in addition to what dougy said there you got the engine control module, transmission control module, and associated coding with the modules in addition to a diffrent main harness for the vehicle as you have no wiring for the valve body or trans module...... going auto to manual is easy as you take shit out and throw it away, going manual to auto, is just retarded money wise, you would be more wise to take the few grand hit, then to commit to such a headache. here is a crazy idea, but it just might work, trade your car straight across with someone who has an auto and wants a manual?

    Haha, made me lol.

But seriously, just trade it with one of the hundreds of auto guys that complain about how they should've got a manual tranny, because only manny is cool on car forums.

    Re: manual to auto

first everyone...he is going from a manual to an AUTO...

anyways, yes the crankshafts are different....its where the pilot bearing rides in...the input shaft from either tranny wont fit in the opposing engine..

    Haha...so true.

My A4 is Tiptronic and that's exactly how I wanted it. If I wanted a spirited drive, shift through gears and boot around corners, I'd take my E30 out.

    Re: manual to auto

You do not need a new crankshaft, the older AEB motors had different cranks but our AMB motors have the same crank if I'm not mistaken
