It is an A4 quattro 1996 2.8, so which fluids do you want me to check?! ( sorry I dont know much about cars)
That sounds like a wheel bearing to me.
Find an open road, or a curvy road that you can go 50mph on. If you can make a slow/wide turn at that speed and the noise changes depending on your turn(left or right) it is most likely the wheel bearing.
If your noise remains the same or gets louder on a left turn, the right suspension is loaded, it would be the right wheel bearing. If the noise gets louder or just remains the same on a right turn, the left side suspension is loaded, and it would be the left bearing.
You don't want to be swerving around as fast as this little guy
, but probably half that speed. You shouldn't need to turn the wheel more than 40-45* to figure out what side is the issue.
The "swerving" can be done a 2-4 lane road if it's empty, but I do NOT recommend it if you don't know what you're doing. I do it on customer cars often, but I know what I'm looking for and I know the tricks well.
Just make sure it's coming from the rear. The rear wheel bearings can be a pain if you don't have the right tools.
