Re: Brake Light Safety - Blinking Smart!

Nice work in terms of technical stuff...
But I think it will be a bit confusing for the drivers behind, rather than helpful....

I would love a how-to, just to learn new things, but I guess there wont be any.

Great idea. Very well thought out too, how it doesn't flash when using the brakes repeatedly. Details?

I know Ford tried this on some cars a few years back. I always thought it was a good idea, and didn't know why everyone didn't adopt it. Good work

Pretty common in the motorcycle world...

Anytime I am on my bike I flash the piss out the brake light. Even though my bike is bright orange...some idiot behind me may not be paying attention.

    Cool Video

Re: Brake Light Safety - Blinking Smart!

It's a good idea, especially with the added benefit of the LEDs (firing up quicker than incandescents). I think Mercedes got license to try this on 10 test vehicles in the colonies. They set the tails to flash only under hard braking. In testing, the flashing has shown a decrease in rear-ending-style accidents when the vehicle in front has the flashing. In the US, this is overall highly illegal, as the only flashing lights allowed must be amber and generally on the top of the vehicle. I see you're in the UK, but you still might want to check your local laws to see if they're legal.

Re: Brake Light Safety - Blinking Smart!

Cool, thanks for the link. The only problem I see is it annoying drivers behind me in city driving or something like that. If it was factory installed and only came on during hard braking, i think that would be fine (our BMW has two extra brake lights that come on during hard braking). Personally, if i'm on the highway and traffic suddenly stops or slows, I instinctly reach for the hazard lights.

If I'm traveling on the highway and there's stopped traffic ahead, I put my flashers on until I reach it so no idiot behind me smashes into me.

X3, I find it helps. Sometimes I hate how effective our brakes are. 90% of the time I find myself looking at the rear view when I apply my brakes to make sure no one is going to smash into me. I feel like I can never brake as hard I would have wanted to because of idiot drivers behind me.

Studies carried out by Daimler Benz prove that peoples reaction time is quicker with flashing brake lights than without. The studies found that at a speed of 50 mph the increased reaction time reduces the stopping distance by approximately 14.5 feet, and at 65 mph by around 20 feet.

    So they say.......

I have to say I'd prefer it if it were speed related

Id be tempted to install something like that, but the police over here will pull you over for just about any reason. I dont want to give them another. I do like it though

According to the some state laws flashing red lights or flashing blue lights or both is illegal because it represents an emergency vehicle and you must have a permit to use it. In other words... it is illegal without a permit and if you think Ford has tried it... could you please refer me to an article as I am interested in seeing it. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't do it... Just trying to inform you folks and trying to get the facts straight.

Well that means a lot of people with non-amber turn signals will be in trouble if they ever run their flashers or use their turn signals

Our rear turn signal would fall under this rule also then.

Only if you install the plus version. The standard delay version has a single output and is for the 3rd light. The plus has two outputs so that you can run it to your main brake lights also. I agree, the plus version would probably be a bad idea.
