Changing my fuel filter tomorrow: couple of ?'s

I've read several threads and DIY's, but no one has written anything about relieving the fuel pressure, apart from loosening the gas cap.

Should I pull the fuel pump fuse and run the engine until it dies, or is that a bad move for our cars?

    Thanks

    Open the gas tank cap.

When you go to take off one of the fuel filter lines do it slowly and look the other way (so as to not get fuel in your face). The pressure will be relieved. Its not that bad. In fact, fuel doesn't really spare anywhere either. It'll just drip out of hte fuel filter since the filter is full. I hardly noticed anything when I disconnected the lines on my fuel pump to swap out my fuel pump. Same pressure. Same connectors.

I like to use needle nosed pliers to take those connectors off. Easier than my fingers. Be patient and careful since they are easily broken.

My car was not easy to start after the filter was changed. It took a bit of driving to get the proper fuel pressure back. It was fine after 5-10 minutes of driving though.

A new filter resolved my slight surging at full acceleration...it's intended effect.

Re: Changing my fuel filter tomorrow: couple of ?'s

    Great info guys, thanks!

One more question: I read in one of the posts that I should be using fuel filter #8E0-201-511-D since there is a split in the 2003 year.

My dealer gave me #8E0-201-511-J. Am I going to install the wrong filter?

    thanks again

pull the fuel pump fuse and start the car and let it stall out to get the fuel out of the lines. Dont forget to put the fuse back in.

Check out this thread for the VIN split.

Don't take the caps off the new filter all at the same time. Also, don't take the lines off the old filter at the same time. Uncap the new filter as you're going along while capping the old filter as you transfer each line.
