Use painter's tape and a razor blade, mask vertically and then horizontally here:

The tails on an Avant looks much easier to do since the white area is more of a straight rectangle.

what kind of paint did you use to do your tails and side markers? did you wet sand after and clearcoat them? I've been thinking of doing this this winter as well.

Here's what I did.

Masked the lens.
Use VHT Nightshades to tint. Being no less than 8 inches away from the lens I sprayed it with consistent strokes going past the lens. I waited a few minutes (i think it was 10-15) minutes between coats, used 2 coats.
Waited 30 minutes for the last coat to dry. Sprayed it with a clear coat. waiting a few minutes between coats, used 5 coats of clear. Waited 6 hours for the clear to dry. I wet sanded it with 800 grit sand paper, then 1000, then 1500. Applied rubbing compound, then polishing compound.

For the sidemarkers:

sprayed it with a plastic adhesion promoter. Waited 10 minutes. Sprayed with VHT Nightshades. 1 Coat. Waited 30 minutes. Sprayed it with clearcoat, waiting a few minutes for each coat to dry; used 3 coats. Used rubbing compound and then polishing compound.

What I should have done to the lens, if I had to do it again, would be to use the adhesion promoter on it. It made the VHT lay real smooth and clean.

oh, and Romell i got the wheels from alloy-r-us. they advertise regularly here. they are R8 reps. $699 shipped for the set, and they are great quality! awesome deal.

I was wondering, because, Jon's tails quoted me ~$85 plus shipping for both of mine and that's without masking the white part. If I want the white part, I think I had to add another $40. $125 to do it like we have it.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to undercut him and offer to do it for some members here for $80 + shipping? I have an extra set of tails so that I can tint and have people send me their stocks.

contacted the guy who did my tails and he said $80 + shipping for the job he did on mine for AZ members. Obviously a bit less for those who dont want the backup lights masked off. He doesnt use VHT, thins out black paint to do it (basically what VHT is, just uses his own mixture to get the right tint). i'm telling you this is a top notch job...you can look all you want and cant see any masking lines. let me know if anyone is interested and i'll give you his contact info.
