Re: Maaco for painting the lowers?

I would got to a well known body shop. I was going to have a well know body shop in Columbus do mine and they gave me a quote of $1000. A friend of mine took his car to maaco and he said they did an ok job, but then again he had them paint an 97 Civic that he was trying to sell.

Maacoo tends to have tons of overspray. So even the smallest projects can cause havoc.

Was that quote for the lowers? If so that seems like quite a bit.

take all of you shit off and take it in for them to spray it bc they don't know how to mask off overspray areas. They use the same paint as everyone else, it just depends on who's doing the work

Re: Maaco for painting the lowers?

like n7plus1 said they all use the same spray. i got mind paint by them and it came out great only problem i had was that they didnt mask off some important parts. its all about who is doing the job. maaco has many levels of quality paint that is needed. from shity paint application to supreme paint application u'll pay for what u'll get. i say do it but i got it done much less than that maybe cause i've gotten other things painted with the same guy

If you can remove the parts and prep them yourself, then it might come out good... but at that point, you might as well just try doing it yourself.

Re: Maaco for painting the lowers?

    wow.

i never thought that maaco would cost MORE than a normal body shop... maaco paint jobs suck, they don't mask appropriately, they don't do door sills, they overspray like hell, their workmanship in general is shoddy at best, and apparently their prices are B.S too.

    skip maaco, go somewhere GOOD

Alright. i think im just going to skip Macao and find a body shop. i don't really want to try to paint it myself because i have no experience painting and i have also heard that silver is a hard color to match.

I would agree that doing the prep work yourself would save you a lot of money. Most of the time spent on a paint project is in the prep work.

However, I would not suggest anyone try painting car parts on their own without the proper knowledge and equipment. You need a compressor, paint gun, quality paint, etc. And then you have to wet sand it, buff it, and polish it. Have a professional do that part, it will look much better at the end.

I saw some moron that took his 68 Camaro to maaco. They had over spray on the tires, and wheels, frame, bumpers everywhere.

    STAY AWAY FROM MAACO...
When I was younger and stupid, I got my Civic painted at Maaco...
    worst move I ever made...!
they taped everything and sprayed... the quality of paint was crap... chipped & cracked way too fast and easy!
If my brother hadnt totaled the car no one would have ever bought it... even though it was pimp (besides the crappy paint job)!

Re: Maaco for painting the lowers?

I was looking around a while back at getting my lowers painted and was quoted in the range of 700-1100 depending on the shop. That was for just painting the lowers, nothing else. That included the shop basically doing all the work for me so I'm sure you can get lower prices if you remove and re-install the pieces yourself.

I've heard mixed things about Maaco. Most people recommend staying away but I have talked to a couple people that have been more than pleased with their work. I think in the end, you're probably going to get a more consistently higher quality or paint work if you take it to a more professional body shop. You might get lucky and get a perfectly good job done at Maaco for a lower price, but do you really want to risk your car on that?

I just painted my front bumper -- It's really not that hard. Lowers will be even easier (I had those painted by a friend for $100 + paint awhile back)

Re: Maaco for painting the lowers?

Maaco will most likely mask off the lowers and paint them right on the car and get clear coat overspray all over it. It only takes a few mintutes to take the lower moldings off the doors I think its 2 screws. The rocker moldings have approx. 10 torx on each side. The front lower valance has a couple clips in either wheel well and 2 torx in the fog openings going in the ^^ direction, once the torx are removed you take the valance off by pulling on one corner to the other. The rear stays on unfortunately

Re: Maaco for painting the lowers?

Maaco doesnt properly prime the surface so the paint does not correctly adhere and they cant match metallic flakes worth a damn.

Re: Maaco for painting the lowers?

Someone please refresh my memory, Maaco is one of the class of body shops that offer cheap paint jobs, right? e.g. Earl Scheib, etc? If you are confident with your painting skills, you can DIY for $50.

    Parts needed:

    Automotive Sandpaper Assortment: $4
Spray Paint from Automotive Touch up matched to your body paint: $20
    Adhesive Promoter: $8
    3M rubbing Compound: $5
    Polishing Compound: $5

Sand the pieces with 1200 or 1500 grit sandpaper. Clean pieces by washing it in dish soap and water. Rinse well and air and towel dry completely. Spray adhesion promoter, one medium coat. Wait 30 minutes. Spray with body color. Wait 10-15 mins between coats. To match the body, use at least 3 coats. Wait 30 minutes. Spray clearcoat. wait 10-15 min. between coats. Use 4-5 coats. Spray it wet, don't "dust" clearcoat or you will get a rough surface. Wait over night or at least 6 hours. Use wet sandpaper, progressing from 1000 grit to 1500 grit. Use the rubbing compound to blend and smoothen clear coat. Use polishing compound until the surface is smooth like glass.

x2 DIY ftw. And you're literally saving hundreds (if not thousands in my case), and for what? your time and $70?. Maybe its the fact that I live in Westchester NY and everything costs more, but after 2 body shop quotes each way over $1000 ($1000 itself still being way overpriced), i gave up looking. I'll be doing the job myself in the next few months.
