diagnosis help please? Abnormal idle, then engine dies...

    Hi,

I have a 2003 A4 3.0 quattro 6spd. About a month ago my malfunction indicator light went on. While sitting at the intersection I noticed my car shook a little and the rpms fluctuated at idle. I brought it into the dealership and they said the codes related to the cam shaft were sporadic so I was okay to go. Sweet, thanks for the $200 car wash. Then the MIL light went on two days later only to go back off. Then last week the light went back on and I noticed that my car did the fluctuating rpms at idle and the car shook. I made an appointment a week later, only to cancel it because the light went back off today.

Then, today, in the morning I was sitting at an intersection on the way to work and the rpms fluctuated a bit, then slowly decreased till the engine died. I still had power to my car (radio was still on, etc.), so I restarted my car and it seem to run okay another .25 miles to work.

    My questions are:
    1. Does anyone know what this could be?
    2. If so, how much to repair?
    3. Is my car safe to drive?

    Thank you in advance.
I also placed a call into the dealership and I'll talk to a service rep when he returns my call.

I'de go to Autozone or equivalant and have the codes pulled for free and then post those up so people have more to go on to help you trouble shoot. It sounds like a coil pack issue, but you have a 3.0 so there could be something else if the dealer said they had camshaft codes. Can the dealer give you a copy of the codes they pulled?
