PICS!!! of my latest problem w/ my S (Warning!!:graphic!!)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So before the pics, I noticed this morning that I had some grease on the outer spokes of my front drivers side wheel...didn't have time to take it off before class....

Fast-forward to 6pm after class, I remove my front drivers side wheel....

    (Yes, that is all grease)

And here is what I find:

CVC boot exploded/erupted into a monstrous shower of grease!!! Anyone guess the extent of the damage or how much to fix it??
Also, should i be worried about my brake pads absorbing any of that grease??

Eh! Couple hundred for parts(one side)You'll know if there were any damage as a result. Clicking noise, grinding...you'll hear it most when you turn. I had a small leak and caused minor damage, but the boot kit will fix it right up...no worries.

Yea, i figured that already, I've been told I will hear a clicking noise, but I have been getting that for the past couple weeks ONLY when I depress my brake pedal at low speeds, is that related to the CV Boot issue or no?

it will make more noise when the grease is gone.

i would just replace the boot and load it with grease, your noise will probably go away too.

dude, its not hydrochloric acid and its no worse for you than engine oil.

Although i do recommend gloves and not eating it, no more care needs to be taken than you do with an oil change. the shit you have to watch out for is carb clean and brake clean, the main ingredient is Xylene which is very very toxic.

Yeah. it's just grease LOL. BUT if you want, you could wear a full respirator and hazmat suit.

Just make sure you walk around the house a few times before working on the car and video the neighbors reaction.

And I wouldn't wait till this weekend... Any small rocks/pollen/sand/dirt/dry leave particles/ANYTHING gets in there and it's a PITA and you'll have to replace the half shaft.

he keeps driving it like that and there's no way you want to re-use the axel. I could understand if it were new.. but if his car has mileage, it's a bad idea to just throw a new boot on it imo.

EDIT: I had the link to JHM's boot kit for 30 bucks, but then i saw they had already posted it above ^^^ those axles are tempting too

buy the entire axle for 125 from JHM and a boot kit. swap in the new axle and repair yours when you have time as a spare for the other side or one to sell. cause when one goes out the other side will very soon. I changed both of mine recently, do both now or you will be cleaning up the same mess on the other side later.

    TROOF!

I replaced my passenger side and 5 weeks later needed to do the driver side. Wish I would've caught both before the boot split in half. Clean up was a PITA!

After you fix that, go to the other side and look for cracks!

Re: PICS!!! of my latest problem w/ my S (Warning!!:graphic!!)

okay, my car has 66k on it, i had the passenger side outer boot repaired at vast when i got all new control arms at the end of july.....then the clicking sound started about a month after that...wish i would have replaced both......both a guy from raxles and Mike from VAST said I should be okay w/ just the boot kit. I will be driving on it all weekend but only to and from work, I am taking it in Monday.....you guys think I will be okay through the weekend and not cause any PERMANENT damage I will be driving about 100 miles top til monday??

Isn't the labor going to be about $150-$200 more if I replace the axle vs. doing just the boot kit. I just ordered the kit from VAST for $24 shipped!!! but, don't want to have to repair something else down the road cause of this problem....Jordan and Matt, what do you guys think??

Replace the axle. Its EASY as hell to do, a lot easier than doing the boot kit. I paid 160$ for mine, now that you can get it for 125 you might as well to both sides...$600 from Audi btw per axle. You will need triple-squares to take bolts off so get them too if you don't already have a set.

    ^^

    Simple fix.

Replace the boots now for $20 as a temp fix.
Replace the axle now for ~160 and be done with the "clicking". In all honesty, you might as well replace both axles and not worry about any damages.

I replaced both my CV boots and control arms about a month ago. My passenger side CV boot exploded all over the place as well. When I hit 105K, I too will be replacing my axles, currently at 94K.

As of now, I love the GT's. when I first got 'em, I had the horrible "pogo" effect and a very sloppy ride, as 6 of my 8 control arms were bad. Once those got replaced a couple months ago, the ride is AMAZING. Corners great, no pog at all!, and it handles bumps amazing for a CO setup and my car is pretty slammed....I know that if I had stock suspension w/ my wheels, I would have blown atleast 2 tires, but the GT's saved me both times. As for noise, I can sometimes hear my springs making a "bouncing" sound when I go over speed bumps, other than that, nothing really

How about you? Whats ur thoughts on them......any downsides??

Corners great, no pog at all!, and it handles bumps amazing for a CO setup and my car is pretty slammed....I know that if I had stock suspension w/ my wheels, I would have blown atleast 2 tires, but the GT's saved me both times. As for noise, I can sometimes hear my springs making a "bouncing" sound when I go over speed bumps, other than that, nothing really

How about you? Whats ur thoughts on them......any downsides??
Mine makes noise when it goes over speed bumps and train tracks so I was just curious if that was just mine and they weren't installed right or if thats common. I love the ride way better than stock. I think mine is a little too slammed. My passenger side front wheel rubbed a hole in my splash guard. I should have rolled my fenders cause its starting to chew my wheel a bit. Sometimes the big speed bumps I bottom out on no matter the angle or the speed I'm going.

Don't worry about it, I've been driving with both of my CV boots torn on the front for about 8 months. With the shot CV boots, I also had a shot tierod end. Shit made alot of noise when turning but it was fine. I finally got new axles and tierods about 2 month ago.

ya i just found out i had the same problem this morning. i haven't had time either to pull it. so i'm probably going to order both jhm axles just to get it over and done with. I'll do that if warranty doesn't cover it. i'll be making my decision tomorrow morning.

Well I read this thread earlier in the week. Odd enough I also noticed some grease on the inside and spokes of my front drivers wheel but not much. Just check it out and.... ITS RIPPED!

I'll go ahead and read over this thread and see what I have to do. This pisses me off!

JHM will probably do the trick!

Just do what I did, order a new outer CV joint from Jason, $94 shipped to me!!! Please note that if you continually drive on a torn outer CV boot, opposed to what many say about it ruining the entire AXLE, it will simply make the entire OUTER CV JOINT shot. Even though $125+shipping vs. $94 shipped isn't that big of a deal, if you aren't doing the install/swap yourself, getting a whole new axle to fix the problem will be alot more expensive in labor than getting the right and necessary part to fix it. Thanks again Jason for the helpful info!!
