How I spent my econmomic stimulus check

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I relate this story so that others might not have to go through this too.

I bought a TB kit from ECS tuning and found a reputable shop that would do the install with "customer supplied" parts. 25k miles later the tensioner went, requiring the whole job to be done over again! Luckily I caught it before the TB broke, but I'm still out nearly $1200 for parts and labor.

The shop that did the work the first time won't warranty the job because they didn't supply the parts. Sooo...this is the last time I try and save a few bucks by buying parts on-line. From this day forward I'll buy all my parts from the shop performing the work!

Tough lesson to learn. There goes the new coilovers I was going to get soon!

Owning a shop I see this all the time on a variety of parts. People continue to want whored internet pricing however and will do everything possible to save 5 bucks. You get what you pay for these days thats for sure!!! On another note, 25k miles is still a good bit, I dont know of any shop that would eat that "redo" even if they did supply the OEM parts

What did you spend the $100 you saved on the customer supplied parts on?

    Ha ha. You're hilarious. Really.

Like I said, lesson learned! And actually it was more like $250 price difference. But even then...

    zigzag effect, lol!

you have to vent that out

OP, you just had bad luck! it's alright to buy online parts.
compare this, PureMS sells a front end suspension kit which is 13 pieces kit(controls arms, tie rod, etc) that is far cheaper than you get from a garage or the stealership. It's the same quality!

The ECS TB kit is all OEM parts if I'm not mistaken so it's just a (bad) luck of the draw.

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.

if he's talking about the hydraulic piston you can actually fuck it up when you install it..If you go wrong the first time and you have to compress it again you have to do it slowly not to damage it...i doubt that if the shop did that it took like 25000 miles to shit

Didn't bother as I'm told the part itself wouldn't be warrantied that long. Also, the work would not be warrantied unless the entire service was done, with parts supplied by the shop. It was a peace of mind thing. There was some other stuff I had done at the same time (thermostat, cam seal, etc).

I did actually have some other issues with the shop that did the first TB service (bolts not secured, etc), and it was the hydraulic piston that had failed. Same problem though...they didn't supply the parts, so I couldn't go after them.

To my neighbor in College Park, I may get in touch with you next time I need some work done! Going to do suspension next (sway bars, then C/O's).

    Thanks for all the feedback...
