chipped or not

I recently purchased '03 RS6. How can I tell if it has been chipped?
One of the bolts holding the CPU black plastic cover was missing (the most difficult to reach) and and grinding marks (rotary tool?) near one of the two rivits/screws on the metal cover of the CPU.

Well, a few ways come to mind: (1) Run another RS6 and see if you rape it; (2) Open up the ECU and see if there is an actual chip in there; (3) Try playing with the cruise control stalk in case you have an APR chip; (4) If you know someone with a VAG (or better someone with a GIAC handheld flashloader), they may be able to pick up if you have a GIAC file(s); or (5) boost gauge (you may also be able to log through VAG as well).

I've never opened CPU before. What exactly would I look for?

I did a quick search and could not find anything specific to a RS6. Check out the AWE link below and compare what you have with what's shown for the various cars (the AWE RS6 page actually linked to the site below on ECU removal, so I presume it is similar).

In terms of what to look for, if your car was actually "chipped" through hardware rather than a flash (and you said it looks like there has been some tampering) you should see a logo or sticker of the company whose chip you're running.

Quick question since I don't have a RS6, do they come with a boost gauge of some type from the factory?

some cArs cannot be flashed with a new tune for the ECU so they actually replacethe actu hardwAre oR chip in ECU. For example when I bought the APR 93octane "chip" or program or tune, they just plugged the car to alaptop to retune or remap my ECU. My buddy with an 00 S4 bought the same program and they hadro acutalky go into the ECU box underthe hood to swap the chip controlling the ECU mapping

I would pop open the ecu. Sometimes you will be lucky and they actually just put a sticker on it from the chip maker. Other than that, I would install a boost gauge. Then I would go to RS6.com and find what usual boost is and see what I'm running.

Gigi, has a good idea. Max the R's out (C'mon, its an Rs6) and see were it wants you to shift. Or if it is an auto watch were the shift points are.

See if there are any local dealers or reps of the most common "chip" manufactuers and take the car in. I am sure they would not mind plugging into your car to tell you.

Tell them you are interested in adding a program to the car. They will in returnn come back and say you dont have a program or say you do.

wmgarton - where do you live? Perhaps somebody with RS6 -- stock or with chip -- is near enough for simple compare? What does seller say? Sounds like something was done in there once, maybe restored for "stock" sale? I'd have to think seller would tell you, no? What was his response?

heres an idea take her to the track.. rape everything there... see what your 1/4 mile time is and compare.. sure you could find someone who wants to brag about there rs6 time.. give you and estimate.. so you could legally hit 120... without the ticket
