    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

I've had an escort passport 8500, and currently have an escort passport 8500 X50 and have had great experiences with each. Passports are the way to go, unless you want to spend 400+ for V1 (or passport 9500).

    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

The V1 exceeds only in the arrows. But all the stuff that Passport comes out with I say its probably a little better on the KA band. I bought my girl the V1 and I have the newest 9500iX with camera detection and its awesome. I got to say I can get up to 2 miles of k/Ka reading in a straightaway. Worth every penny from the Cobra/Uniden etc.

    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

well are you looking for a radar/laser detector...or a laser jammer they are two diff things.....personally I have owned a V1,9500i, and escort x50 radar detectors. I am thinking about getting a laser jammer because laser is more common here in FL then it was in NY.

If your talking detectors go with the 9500i, it alllows you to silence false alerts i.e. supermarkets, shopping centers,banks...basically anything that puts out a radar signal....

The V1 is great for advance users , who know how to swap between modes and like knowing the direction of the radar signal...

9500i has built in GPS, can display your speed, you can setup speed trap zones, lock out falses and the 9500ci even tells you where red light cameras are.No arrows but very quiet high performance detector.Upgradeable via USB so its always got the latest technology and its free....

the escort x50....has great value....can be found for around 200...the other ones listed cost 400+, excellent range, come in blue or red..just like the 9500i but no gps or lockout features...still awesome detector, maybe the best dollar for dollar....
    2.0 T Quattro - 20% tint,hardwired 9500i,alpine 757 amp,alpine 12" type r sub,RS4 Sway,Giac X-chip, VMR 19 710's wrapped in Conti Extreme DW, H&R Coilovers .

    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

Yeah, my 8500 was stolen, went to replace it and thought about the 9500 but I just couldn't get myself to throw down that much, I got the 8500 X50 new for 240 shipped. It works wonderfully, and with only several false alarm areas (walgreens, cvs, etc) around me, it knows what is what and does not go off loud for those (automuted from start). It has something to do with it storing the last 10 or a dozen maybe signals. It went nuts the first time at each of these 5 false alarms around me, and then never again.

Camera and red light markers would be nice though!

And I agree, RED is perfect. If I had a different car w/ a different interior I'd go with the blue, but with all red its a perfect match.

I watched their videos but I'm skeptical, if it's really a "laser" how are you supposed to jam light?

    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

Well see that you live in Canada look up your local laws because in the majority of Candaian provinces radar detectors are very illegal.

The police use RDD (Radar detector detectors) to pick up radar leakage from your radar detector and will pull you over and confiscate it.

If they are illegal in your area really your only option is the Beltronics STi, which is completely undetectable to all RDD's and has great sensitivity to radar as well.

As for laser and radar/laser detector will only detect the laser when you are being hit with it and by that time the police will already have your speed. Laser jammers do work and will not allow the laser gun to get a speed, giving you time to slow down...shut off the jammer...then the laser gun will be able to get a speed, but of course now you will be going the speed limit.

They're not illegal in Alberta but I don't have one anyway, they just give you a false sense of security which in turn makes people think they can do whatever they want...
That's interesting info about the detector detectors. I didn't know about them.

But my question is how do you "jam light"? I understand how radar "jammers" work by emitting confusing radar signals (and yes they are illegal most places I think) but how do you "jam" a beam of light? They should be able to get a reading about the same time your sensor figures it out at which point it would be too late to do anything anyway. Not to mention, wouldn't you have to be "beaming" some alternative signal back to confuse the readout? At which point how would you accurately aim at the lidar gun or is the reading of scattered light waves as imprecise as the radar wavelength?

I would use http://www.guysoflidar.com/, http://www.radardetector.net/forums/ and http://www.radarreviews.net/forums/ as a reference before using laserJammerTests.com just because of their conflict of interest IMO. The forums I linked you to are really good for personal reviews from a lot of people who have actually used the systems.

I personally use a Valentine V1 right now and I love it as a radar detector (not a Jammer). Not so much for laser because detecting laser is just an advanced ticket warning system.

Go with the Escort 8500 x50 - I had many detectors but have NOT gotten a ticket since I got the x50 and hardwired it.

Yup, affordable and great piece of equipment. Hardwire it for sure, quite easy. I put the switch by my right knee (the green light down low by knee bolster in pic) and ran the wiring up my A pillar, wire pops out just to the left of sunroof control where radar resides.

    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

i have an escort and love it. the only ticket i got was when i had it unplugged (stupidity runs about 200 dollars nowadays). the ticket was 62 in a 40. i know i was doing ~55 but the ticket said laser so i couldnt fight it for calibration. silverstreak is right. you only detect laser when it is too late. however every local unit broadcasts ka band which i don't believe to be laser (I've only been hit with laser when coming out of toll booths). anyway, I've had my older model escort passport for about a year and my only complaint is the suction cups come detached on hot days. mine is mounted under my front tint strip and wired through the headliner. have had no issues with the tint interfering with the detector, and it was a very easy install. ultimately the best way to not get a ticket is not to speed, but my foot is just too heavy for that.

Damn I was just checking the results from the GOL testing and the Escort 9500 works amazing! Might be time to replace my Valentine 1.

    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

Those tests are with the 9500CI which is the remote installed version of the 9500i, it is based on a completely different radar horn. The CI also comes with the ZR4 laser jammers.

Don't get me wrong the 9500i is still good just not as good as the 9500CI, so the Valentine 1 probably still beats out the 9500i on pure radar/laser sensitivity but it seems like it is losing to the CI.

However the Valentine 1 is $400 and the 9500CI is $1600

Yeah I know. I was out checking out the 9500ci last night then I saw the price and said no way. For $1,600 bucks it should include a turbo kit of some measure.

have an X50 and love it, also have a laser star single head unit. i have personally shot my car with a laser gun and it will jam it but with one head i can still get a reading on the passenger turnsignal, but cops are trained to aim for the center so its not really a problem, gives me engouh time to slow down.
here are a few pics of my install.

(i am in no way associated with laser star putting this since there since there has been a big fuss on AW)

I wouldn't risk gettin a jammer ticket. I bet that's f/n RAPE. Using an Escort/V1 with common sense should deffinetely get you out of 95% of the tickets. For the other 5% then you're SOL

jammer is a parking sensor that just happens to work on the same wavelength as the laser guns the police use, thats what is sold as in the UK. yes it beeps when you are about to hit a wall.

FYI, I am/was a long time V-1 user until I got my 09 S5 and wife's 09 A4 both with side-assist/nav/drive-select etc. Something now incessantly sets off the rear arrow alert which I think is the side-assist feature. Very Very annoying and couldn't get it solved so switched to Escort 9500xi which is a pretty cool unit with GPS learning features. I like it much better than the V-1.

V1 FTW. Saved me so many times. The big advantage of it are the arrows and the counter. It is also one of the best for sensitivity. I've gotten one ticket while using it because I was shot with laser. The V1 went off, but by the time a laser detector goes off it's to late being that laser is pretty much instant.

Sell it as fast as you can....Cobra is the worst radar detector manufacturer by far!

Check out the GUYS OF LIDAR, they do tests of radar detectors and laser jammers.

If you are on a budget I would recommend a Whistler Pro 78, the new revision has made it much more sensitive to KA (the band most police use), and has yet to be tested by the GOL. I have one as well as an Escort 8500 X50 and it is almost up there with the X50 at about half the cost. Another good budget option is a refurbished original Escort 8500, Escort is selling these on Ebay for $150 I believe, and the Pro 78 runs around $120.

Hmm, assuming you do in fact live in Ontario Canada you can NOT legally have a radar detector.

    Wiki info:

"*Illegal:Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island,New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories[7]:

    * Legal: Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan

Regardless of whether they are used or not, police there may confiscate radar detectors, operational or not, and impose substantial fines in provinces where radar detectors are illegal.[8]"

That sucks! Looks like its a moot point for you my friend.

    Re: Radar/Laser Detector?

Didn't even notice that.......the Spectre III and IV (RDD-Radar Detector Detectors) will definitely pick up your Cobra from a LONG ways away.

The only radar detector that is immune to the Spectre is the Beltronics STI Driver but it is like $450. However the Whistler Pro 78 and XTR-690 have been designed to lower their emissions and thus are much harder to detect with the Spectre. This may be an ok option, just once you get a legitimate alert just turn off your detector and you'll be fine.

Confused by "what to do?" Are you still asking about getting a different radar detector or what?
