Paris Debut for Audi S4 with 30 percent CO2 reduction
    September 23, 2008 - Audi AG

    • High performance A4 model downsizes to more economical but no less exceptional six cylinder supercharged FSI engine
    • All-new S4 and S4 Avant models debut at 2008 Salon de l'Auto in Paris, running from October 2 to 19
    • Supercharged V6 TFSI with 333PS and 440Nm from 2,500-4,850rpm replaces naturally aspirated V8
    • Six-speed manual or optional seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission that actually further improves fuel economy
    • Evolution of quattro system with active sport differential capable of varying torque not only between front and rear axles but also between each rear wheel
    • Optional Audi drive select adaptable dynamics system enables fine-tuning of throttle response, shock absorber settings and steering feel
    • S4 sedan 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds (outgoing S4 5.6 seconds), top speed limited to 155mph (outgoing S4 155mph), combined mpg 29.1 (outgoing S4 21.2mpg)

Making its Paris Show debut next month will be a new Audi S4 that gives equally high priority to thrills and thrift thanks to a new six cylinder TFSI engine that not only decisively outperforms its V8 predecessor but does so with a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions and 29mpg-plus fuel economy.

The completely new 3.0-liter V6 shares its 'TFSI' designation with the six engines in the Audi range that combine single turbo charging with FSI direct injection, but the newcomer actually bucks the trend by using the alternative method of forced induction - a compact supercharger chosen because it delivers keener response than even two turbo chargers could achieve.

The supercharger's ultra-compact dimensions enable it to fit easily inside the 90-degree V of the cylinder banks, and as a result the gas paths to the cylinder are extremely short, resulting in throttle response that even a naturally aspirated engine of the same displacement can't match. With the compressor's help the new unit generates 333PS and a healthy 440Nm torque peak available from 2,500rpm right through to 4,850rpm, enabling an appropriate 0-62mph sprint time of just 5.1 seconds for the manual sedan (Avant manual 5.2 seconds). Top speed is limited electronically to 155mph. More

The horsepower rating is basically the same thing, so 333 horsepower and approximately 325 ft lbs of torque.

So if the manual version sprints to 62 in 5.1 (or under 5 secs to 60), then the 7 speed S-tronic should be minimally faster, no?

So does the addition of a supercharger for forced induction open up the possibilities for relatively easy perfomance mods? Like, chipping, etc?

Damn the fuel economy sounds pretty good. 24mpg combined means about 30mpg out of a 333hp engine.

Well the 7 speed dual-clutch S-tronic is heavier than a basic manual trans, but we shall see.

Depends how much power Audi has already wrung out of the motor and supercharger. I'm sure there is some room for the software companies to play with as Audi usually plays it fairly safe.

The spec sheet for a manual transmission B7 S4 sedan says 17mpg combined and not 21 as claimed in this press release. The V8's highway mpg, however, is listed at 21. So regardless, the mpg on this new motor is pretty damn amazing.

The press-release wasnt using US mpg when it was talking about the old S4 specs. Only the B8 specs were converted.

They've been converted at 24 mpg combined, whereas the B7's V8 is 17 mpg combined. So a 7 mpg increase over the old engine, while still pumping out 333HP, is damn impressive.

Hope this holds true, mpg is the only reason i would want the 2.0 instead of the V6. Now i can get the total audi package!

Same here. I'd ideally want an A5 2.0T, but since that won't be an option here for us (for awhile) I was going to opt for a new A4 2.0T. But if the new S4 is going to be that efficient, damn...

The RS4 is rumored to be a beefed up variant of the same V6, so this could be very much like the B5S4 where everybody and their mom was doing quick and easy RS4 upgrades.

I think it looks fabulous in sprint blue, and the images make me so dissapointed that the S4 Avant is not coming to North America.

Yeh....I started that 'thread of a beefed up V6 from S4, for the RS4'.
It was all speculation. Speculation suggest, the upcoming RS4 is more likely to get a NA or FI V8 rather then the 'beefed up SC V6' from the S4.

Anyway, the RS5 is going to be revealed soon......so whatever RS5 gets , the RS4 will get it too:D

Totally not true. The S5 and the S4 don't have the same motor do they? And it wasn't from your thread, it was from an article I read on Fourtitude.

Good numbers! Forced Induction generally leads to a car that can have some serious power upgrades relatively cheaply. I guess we shall see if that holds true with this S4.

The B5 S4 is a super value right now... you can get a 400 crank hp car for $13k if you look hard enough!
