Big Brake Kit Upgrades.. Need help deciding..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Figured I would run this by the B5 guys since its the same brake setup and there is more of you on here than C5 owners..

I already have drilled rotors & Hawk HPS pads with the stock HP2 calipers. They don't cut it. And my Z has Skyline GTR brakes (13"+ rotors and 4 piston calipers w Ceramic pads) so it set the bar a bit high for "good brakes". Had my heart set on the 6 piston Porsche kit from ECS cause it's simply gorgeous.. But after printing the fitment template, it doesn't fit behind either set of 18s I have.. So I need other ideas. My credentials are a minimum of 4 pistons, hopefully 14" rotors, but as close as possible, and a reputable brand. I liked that the Porsche kit from ECS took regular Porsche pads. So there were many pad options and they are readily available from any source.. That was also a big plus in case "Brand X" stops making their A6 brake kit and I am left without brake pads.. And the 4 piston kit from ECS is still a stock size rotor. No way I am spending all that money and still having a stock size rotor. Minimum is 13", but as close to 14" as possible...

Give me what ever feedback on brake kits you can. So far, I am leaning towards the 14" Rotora kit as long as it will fit. I have heard some people were not happy with StopTech, and Ksport. Plus Ksport is a brand I have not really heard of. This is brakes, so I want something with a good history.

So what to you guys recommend? Rotora, StopTech, Ksport, ECS 4 piston? Who has what & what do you think?

Re: Big Brake Kit Upgrades.. Need help deciding..

Stoptechs are a good setup. They offer 332's (13") and 355 (14") setups. They tend to be relatively cheap compared to Brembos and Alcons. They get the job done, but some people have had corrosion issues with them. Might be a concern since you live in wintery climate (where salt is used on the roads).

Also look into an Alcon setup from Stasisengineering.com. Amazing performance and they offer both 4 and 6 piston calipers and 328, 355, and 370 rotor diameters. They are on the expensive side, but definitely worth the money.

Startupracing.com sells Brembo setups. Again, great performance but they also come at price.

Re: Big Brake Kit Upgrades.. Need help deciding..

I kinda eliminated the Brembo and Alcon kits based on price. Sure Brembo is THE name in braking. But I just can't justify how much more they cost compared to comparably spec'ed kits... I just see better value in the other brands...

What wheels do you have? I'm surprised the ECS brakes won't fit.

I thought I read somewhere that WMS is going to be selling the ST 332 kit for $1799 in the month of October but I could be wrong...I might have the money and if I do I'll pick up a kit. I've heard nothing but good things about Stoptech

You can also check into a B7 RS4 brake setup. They bolt right up. You can also pick up RS6 calipers(same as the B7 RS4) and buy the B7 RS4 rotors seperate. The RS6 rotors are the wrong offset though. The B7 RS4 brakes are 365mm with brembo calipers. You can pick them up for a pretty resonable price.

Thats what I really wanted but the template would not fit behind either set of wheels.. Spoke clearance wasn't the main issue. Diameter was..

The 993TT ones will. Thats what ECS uses in their stage 3 kit. But thats only a stock size rotor..

Oh, and I will also take any recommendations on rear upgrades too since the C5 OEM ones are as small as a bottle cap.. 034 has an adapter to put 300mm B7 S4 rotors in the back for the B5, anyone know if it will fit C5 too?

warning about the 034 rear kit, the pads dont sweep the entire rotor surface so you end up with a band of rust about .5 inches along the inside.

Im going to paint mine black.

Thats tolerable. I always paint my rotor hats anyway to prevent rust. Do you know if they will also bolt up on a C5?

no idea at all. i would check with em. they have a lot more stuff than is on their website.

That 4piston AP 13" setup is ideal if you want to fit stock wheels or even 18s like mine that are too tight inside to accomodate the 14"+ 6 piston setups.

Throw on an aggressive pad for track days, an added bonus is the pads come out the back like the brembo/porsche and stock calipers, just a single allen key holds the retention clip.

Yeah, you can change pads on my Z in like 10 minutes. Super easy. I would settle for 13" but I really want 14"... Looking for a template for the 14" Rotora setup. The 6 piston ECS was too big for both sets of 18s I have...

Haha, yup. First pass ever was a 12.3. just shy of 4k lbs. Goal is an 11.9... Never dragged the Z. Launches like crap, just spins or gets wheel hop. Sweet on the highway though. Had it up to about 175mph. Even had the balls to take a pic of the speedo @ 160+ for all the doubters :)

    The car-

Decided I am selling it soon. Like the Audi so much more cause its much more enjoyable to drive in every way... But back to Audi brakes :)

Ehhh...keep the Z. Everyone that sells it regrets it later. Someone will have to pry my Z's out of my cold dead hands. :-) To this day, I don't enjoy driving any car more than one of my Z's. And I've driven a lot of different cars. :-)

I used to think that. But comparing it to the refinement, comfort, solidness, and quietness of the Audi it lacks a lot. Plus the power band is so much better in the Audi.. But I will be replacing it with another toy. I'm just bored of it now...

Yeah, Stoptech was low on my consideration list. Heard a lot of negative about them.

Would like to know more about Rotora on our cars.. Otherwise my bigger preference is either a Porsche kit or a retro from another Audi like that R8/RS6/RS4 setup I am now in love with....

Yes. Someone sells the brackets on ebay and there is also a set for sale on here in the classifieds. I think for like $275 for the brackets. My only beef with the 993 kit is its still the same size rotor as stock...

Is there a comprable front upgrade? Something OEM but larger?

unfortunatly no. Im running the B7 S4 rear upgrade, larger than S8, its a 300mm rotor with an adapter plate/longer lines.

Yeah, I saw that on 034's site and liked it. Will it still work on a C5 A6 2.7? Is the hand brake setup the same?

that is something you will have to ask them.

you do have to fiddle with the ebrake cable on the S4 by sliding the carrier forward through the control arm. its a bastard to do but it gives you the extra inch needed just barely.

Honestly its a cosmetic upgrade at best. fills in the wheels better, matches up with a BBK if you have a closely matched rotor.

I have not had any luck finding a two peice slotted/drilled B7 S4 rotor from any source. So the standard zimmerman one peice will have to do for now.

Cool. Cause I definitely want to upgrade rear too. Don't need some 4 or 6 piston thing, just bigger cause the stock 255's look like the same diameter as a Snapple top...
